Lighting Grow Northern Live Tech Talk

like oldster said US 220v is just 2 110v with 2 hot wires/duel phase . the UK only uses one hot wire or leg single phase. the other issue here is Hertz maybe..

UK info
our 240vac is derived from a star ( Y ) connected transformer secondary with the center point connected earth at the transformer this is known as the neutral

the outer legs give 440 vac and 240 vac between any leg and the center point ( neutral )

now we use a PME system in which at the customer cutout, the neutral is strapped to the local earth with a 16 mm conductor this is to eliminate a neutral that is above earth due to transformer imbalance

so unlike the US you have a center tapped 220 vac transformer that is earthed hence you are only 110 vac above earth , here we are 240 vac above earth

Elvis, I really don't want to see the thread hijacked for electrical 101 so the last thing I will post on it.

Think of electric like water in a pipe. You can think of voltage as being the same as water pressure in a pipe. Amps can be thought of as the size of a pipe. If you increase the water pressure more water will flow through the pipe.

If you put the same size faucet on a 1 inch pipe and a 2 inch pipe the same amount of water will come out of both faucets as long as both pipes are at the same pressure. Same goes for amps. A piece of electrical equipment will use the same number of amps on a circuit rated for 20 amps as it will on a circuit rated at 50 amps.

There is a safety issue however if you attaché a piece of electrical equipment that only needs 20 amps to a circuit with a breaker that will allow 50 amps to flow through it. If the piece of equipment fails the amount of electric that could flow would be much greater and could start a fire.

Same with the pipes, if a 2 inch pipe bursts it is going to deliver a lot more water than a 1 inch pipe that bursts

Hope that help visulize

very good point oldster. GN said they would have this issue done by the end of the year.. I can get very caught up in tech talk. its my nature..:peace: no point in caring on ..

Oh I understand now, i thought the 220v here was the same as in europe. So still doable but I gotta spend extra on wiring and such, kinda rather wait for them to come out with something great

dedereweko, you would need to check with GN if the converter required only needs to change the voltage or if you would need one that also changes the frequency as the US is 60hz and Europe is 50hz

Is it fair to say that buy the time they get around to 110v that I might be an old man :roflcry:

If the mains input is between 220-240VAC with a frequency that didn't exceed 63HZ the lights would function correctly. Here is the full electrical input data from Philips.

Another aspect of shipping to the US is the cost, I have just checked the services and the cheapest is UPS express saver which we would be 2 day service and costs roughly £50.00 to send 1-5 units. We are hoping when the 120VAC version is available we will have some distributor or stock held in the US to bring this cost down.

If you can meet the electrical input criteria you can check the cost of shipping here.
According to the above GN specs, the HS1 will run on 220v 60Hz just fine.

How many GN Holographic Series 1's can I safely daisy chain together ? This question is for a friend living in the UK so using the UK electric/plugs etc. Also my friend wants to use one of these plug and grow switches

these are meant to be able to handle a single 600w HPS

thanks in advance
