GoAuto and roark's fungi extravaganza "Work area" Hard hat's please!

By rice wash I mean soaking/boiling brown rice in water and then using the water that's full of carbohydrates to dunk the substrate, in my case PF cakes. I'm probably going to test it out with a few cakes after their second/third flush and see how that goes.

Another question, have you ever experimented with gypsum in your substrates?

Nope. I know you can use it. Seen loads of recipes that call for it. I use crushed oyster shell from the feed store. It adds the calcium, that I believe is why you would use gypsum. But I could be wrong.

Sorry I add pickling lime to the sub and oyster shell to the casing. Pickling lime (calcium hydroxide) adds the cal to the sub to help with p.h.

As for the flushing. Yeah give it a go and report back, please. I have thiught about injecting more food into subs for the same reason. Very well could feed tams too, though. Just keep um separate if you can.

I'll try it once the cakes are so spent I'd have to dispose of them anyway.

Which brings to mind another question - do you think it would be possible for the mycelium (B+) to survive a winter? The temps might get as cold as -40 during winters here. What if I buried the spent cakes in say this big pile of horse shit I've got laying around? Would the mycelium spread? I recall the pile actually spontaneously combusting one time because the internal temperatures got so hot... I've also seen it steam in the middle of winter so that may help. Plus I hear that horse manure is a great substrate.

Oh, and I used a bit less than 100g of gypsum for the 10 cakes I made a week ago. The calcium and sulphur are supposedly very beneficial and some even say it helps adjust the pH to an ideal level for shrooms.

if the internal temp is hot enough to combuste then it may not be good for the mycelium. Way too hot! owever it may survive if it stayed around 70. give it a try.

couple pages back i mentioned a great book i found. It is worth owning. Loads of info. were i got most of mine. All the same, here to help anyway i can. Keep us updated.
