More than 1 way to skin a cat. But I totally agree that you put your seedlings root at risk of harming them using paper towel. Now, just like your Modem/DVD case method, consistent temps are vital. You want /need the Cup of Water to be warm like your DVD case and in a dark spot until you plant. A 24 to 36 hour soak at 80-85f will activate any viable seed. You just need to plant directly into Coco/Soil after your soak and keep those temps at 80-85F. Cover with a cup or dome of your choice. If your temps are 75F or below, it can decrease germ speed and slow root growth down. Our goal is to have our Autos to root as fast as possible. This aill speed up the whole grow. If your vegging a seedling at lower temps, the roots wont grow nearly as fast and thick vs higher temps. Peace, slow
Here is my short and sweet - I have good germinate rates
SOAK seed 24-36 Hours at 80-85 degrees - 75 degree minimum -humidity dome already cranked up ahead of time
REMOVE SEED from water with turkey blaster getting some water and seed in the baster - I will push some water out but leave a little along with the seed
PLANT in SOIL - Starter Pot is sitting in dome with starter soil mix that is already moist - I inset baster, slightly, into soil and gently push out seed along with some water and then cover seed with soil and cover the pot with plastic and placed in dome and shade top of dome with another piece of plastic, I don’t want too much light when they first open their eyes - keep temp as close to 85 degrees once in ground - usually up in 2-3 days up - wish I could claim 100% success, but probably 80-85% - some failures for sure if temps get too low and possible damping off
KEYS to SUCCESS
TEMPS 80-85 ...... SOIL WELL DRAINED ...... FRESH SEEDS

“Damping off typically occurs when old seed is planted in cold, wet soil and is further increased by poor soil drainage.”
