Mephisto Genetics Germination Issues? Please read

More than 1 way to skin a cat. But I totally agree that you put your seedlings root at risk of harming them using paper towel. Now, just like your Modem/DVD case method, consistent temps are vital. You want /need the Cup of Water to be warm like your DVD case and in a dark spot until you plant. A 24 to 36 hour soak at 80-85f will activate any viable seed. You just need to plant directly into Coco/Soil after your soak and keep those temps at 80-85F. Cover with a cup or dome of your choice. If your temps are 75F or below, it can decrease germ speed and slow root growth down. Our goal is to have our Autos to root as fast as possible. This aill speed up the whole grow. If your vegging a seedling at lower temps, the roots wont grow nearly as fast and thick vs higher temps. Peace, slow

Here is my short and sweet - I have good germinate rates

SOAK seed 24-36 Hours at 80-85 degrees - 75 degree minimum -humidity dome already cranked up ahead of time

REMOVE SEED from water with turkey blaster getting some water and seed in the baster - I will push some water out but leave a little along with the seed

PLANT in SOIL - Starter Pot is sitting in dome with starter soil mix that is already moist - I inset baster, slightly, into soil and gently push out seed along with some water and then cover seed with soil and cover the pot with plastic and placed in dome and shade top of dome with another piece of plastic, I don’t want too much light when they first open their eyes - keep temp as close to 85 degrees once in ground - usually up in 2-3 days up - wish I could claim 100% success, but probably 80-85% - some failures for sure if temps get too low and possible damping off

KEYS to SUCCESS

TEMPS 80-85 ...... SOIL WELL DRAINED ...... FRESH SEEDS

Plant Natural

“Damping off typically occurs when old seed is planted in cold, wet soil and is further increased by poor soil drainage.”

i think the heat temps your deffo right about that i do mine on a mag IPTV box as my heat source directly into a root riot in a Tupperware container and in 2 days i have sprouts popping up as not tested the temps but its always the same and thanks for sharing this is how i found out this way of doing seeds https://www.autoflower.org/threads/germination-the-ronin-way.33891/

I have made myself a document with a detailed summary of your process for my next grow, ageing grey matter being what it is. As you say, there is more than one way to skin this cat, but I think your process is at least as good as any other I am aware of, and likely better than many or most. When my next grow happens, I will document the germination and transplant process in detail. Thanks again for your efforts here @slowandeasy , you make a valuable contribution to this site.
No prob brother, glad to help others. I can promise that if your temps are 80-85F, any Viable seed will germ the easiest. Not having roots touch paper towel is a good thing, less risk of damage. But if your temps are 75f or lower...fix it before wasting seeds trying. As @MrOldBoy points out, Damping off is common with lower temps...even if they sprout. The other thing I suggest highly is to prep your Soil atleast 24 hours before planting. Put them in the area you intend to sprout and cover to keep temps and humidity optimal. Sounds like you do well, but I think you will like my method just as much or more. Peace, slow

Oh, I am sure that I will like it more. I will keep you posted next winter... :thanks:

I always drop em straight into soil. Moisten is cover with a dome in my only tent. I always have flowering plants in there as well. To keep temp in the mid 80s i use a simple clip on screw in light with a 50 watt highly inefficient spot light. Its only purpose is heat. I keep it about 6 - inches with a soil thermometer stuck in. I hardly ever add more moisture until it pops.

I am with slow most of the germ issues are low temp. Growing up on a farm running tens if thousands of square feet the biggest worry in the cold temps was heat for germination. The second for most is drowning the poor thing. Amazingly they need very little water to germ. And all this handling of them after they popped from paper towel method blows me away. I am quite versed in growing things but it never occured to me to do it this way by choice they are delicate and i am not Lol.

Only thing we ever did pre germ was tobacco seedlings. Long long time ago and that was out of necessitt. Too small to handle to plant beds. so they were pre germed in cheesecloth( trays covered in plastic wrap ontop of the fridge in grandma's house cause the old fridges were warm on top) then mixed into barrels of water and sprayed evenly using a piston pump that didnt do much damage to the tiny specs. Sure some were killed but they were aleays over seeded in case of frost after planting anyway so always had surplus plants.

I germinate "The Ronin Way" as well... using Jiffy pellets. That was the first thread I ever read on AFN and have been doing it that way ever since.

Recently I had some issues with some older beans not germinating, so will try the shotglass method @slowandeasy outlined for my older beans.

Not to long ago maybe a year. I started using a net pot about 4-5 inch ones to start my seeds. Before this I did the soak start method and the heat pad method as well. My buddy and I used that same technique. He started getting 50% loss rate at one point. Mine started to slip a bit too. That's till we stopped trying to "do the most" as the youngsters say.

The switch has led to 100% germination rate. My secret you ask?

1.Take the net pot put dirt in it.
2.Extend your pointer finger.
3.Insert pointer finger in dirt no higher than midway between 1st and 2nd knuckles.
4.Remove finger
5. Insert seed in finger hole
6.Cover hole you can use that same finger
7.Water with bottled water, maintain a damp soil.
8. Place in tent with lights on.
9. Wait 3-5 days, keep soil damp not swampy.
10. When she pops up plant her in your main pot.

This can also be done in the main pot without a net pot. I know it's a complicated process, but I have not lost a seed in a long time, my friend hasn't either. I just started an orange crack along with some others that OC is not a new bean by any means she took an extra day or 2 to pop up.

I sill have some Orange Crack too. Got them as freebies when Mephisto was based in Spain and accepted Paypal.

You won't ever find OC, it was a freebie for like one month it seemed. Never went on sale. I missed out on white crack x double grape. Maybe one day as an illuminauto we will get them.
