I understand kinda how you feel. We don't have shale, but the whole damn state is just a pile of sand. The forest behind my house has great soil, but literally 3 feet away, it's just garbage. I also have a 6'x12' no till veggie garden, but getting it ready was not really worth the trouble. At least yet. I had to remove about 1' of just crap that looked like a dirty sand box littered with weed roots, no weeds, just their roots. Then I added about 2' of decomposing shaved wood, and about 1' of compost, with about 40 lbs of worm castings. I'd feed it EWC tea weekly for about 6 months, and then planted. The only thing to thrive was the radishes, and spinach. This year should be better do to having lots more organic materials, plus I've been composting my rabbits bedding for it too, HELLO NITROGEN! (alfalfa, and timothy hay with rabbit poo goodness)

I'd agree that the control of the pots is nice. Compared to my garden, it's a damn breeze. I'd love to have a green house. So you know what size your going with yet?
welcome to the gotta make our own soil club, lol. Been doing it at this location for 5yr now, keep making compost and dose soil, this yr will be better and each succeeding yr better and better, sound like you got plenty of organic stuff at hand

Lol no kidding man. I have enjoyed it, it forced me to learn. To be honest, anymore I care more about my soil than I do my plants. If the soil is not happy, nothing is. I professorially cooked for 11 years and after serving a few thousand heart attacks and fat asses I started to care about what I eat. Even though the garden was not very bountiful, it was rewarding. I have a some radishes I let go to seed, 1 is a monster. The root/stalk is like forearm sized, and the top is so thick it looks like kale. Haha I have 2 different radish phenos!!!

yup, all starts with the life of soil, the gardener's bank acc

Already the stuff I've learned here has changed our approach to the veggy gardening as wel as canna.I always kind of left the gardening to Ma but it looks like I'll be getting more involved now. I think I'll be building lots of soil.

Thats awesome man. I've done things like this with the family, but it was just me following directions from my mom, and as I got older it was just repeating the steps. It wasn't till I got in to growing herb that I got in to the soil, and understanding what was going on.
Well start to understand, theres always more to learn.

She's been busting her ass on the garden for years.... it's kind of a struggle here. This comes at a time when we're converting to raised container beds. (Actually 2 old 16' Lund skiffs ) so there'll be lots of use for this soil building knowledge:thumbsup:.. .

So just an update on the soil We had some wet weather this weekend the started as a light rain, and turned to buckets o' downpour. I had the pools covered, but I didn't expect the storm we had, and I guess I didn't fully secure it. Both pools collected about 5" of water, but neither overflowed. I've been working on getting it out of the pools, and in to my soil box that has a weed fabric bottom. No biggie, but I do it all by hand cause it has worms in it, so it's just taking a while.

So some positive note I've see are the worms are happy, and healthy. the cooking is not getting to hot for them. I have been able to identify lots of red wigglers, and a handful of Canadian earthworms. There are a good amount (~150)of maple seeds in the soil from the trees above. I tend to not remove stuff like this unless is's like an infiltration. I have found about 30 maple sprout lings, and a good amount of alfalfa/timothy grass sprouts too. They all just got mixed back in while moving the soil around. This makes me feel I like the soil is going to be gentle, and suitable for auto. I'm still going to do a coco hole/pocket for seeds, but not worried so far that it will shock young plants.

Oh man it has that great ocean funk smell. It's not bad by any means, but if you have ever lived near the ocean I'm sure you know what I mean. Brought back some good memories for me. I also really like the look of the rice. Besides the properties it's good at, I feel it kinda add an artisanal look to the soil.

I'm going to go ahead and get some seeds germing today/tomorrow. Start them in some coco/rice hulls, and the soil should be good to go by transplant time. Talk to you guys later.
