Well most of us replace our equipment so many times by the time we finally get to the setup we like anyway. The main thing is to start growing and figure out what it is you want in the long run.
If you have a hydro shop anywhere nearby I ditch those cubes and go for some rapid rooters or some Coco plugs. The Coco plugs that have a little bit of nutrients in them and work so much better than those grodan or those rockwool.
If you go straight into Fox Farm soil that's bit too hot you could mix your soil and layer it with something like Happy Frog if you have that in your area.
I don't bother with the paper towel I go 24 to 36 hours soaking in a cup until I get a nice white crack in the seed and then I shove it down into my medium sideways. Technically if you can find a point those should face up or that I never do it that way.
