does the insulated ducting make much of a difference with the sound?

having been a musician and audio engineer for a couple of years, let me make this quite clear.

I am a freak about noise, and where I live its not smell my main concern, but sonic stealth. If you think noise is going to be an issue, do NOT cut corners. I tried and ended up spending twice the money until I got it right. Putting the fan inside a box and filling with foam was the very first thing I tried and it does very little.

Here are a couple of tips.

1) There is actual fan noise, and there is carbon filter sucking noise, and there is ducting blow out noise.

2) Never ever buy a digitally controlled fan controller unit (usually with automatic thermostat) like for instance GSE speed controller. They will make your fan slower, but it will hum like you would´t believe. Plus it seriously strains the condensers thus seriously shortening you fan's life

3) Buy everything +/- double of your needs.

For example, if you need a 125 rvk fan, get a 250 and step it down in speed. For this you will need a Variac (variable voltage controller). These are both very easy to DIY, a bit more expensive to buy, but I cannot stress how much this is the nº1 thing you need for noise control. Completely silent (hum wise) and does not damage your fan at all. All you need to do is buy one at about double the Amp rating of your fan. So if your fan runs at 0.8 amps, buy a 1.5 Variac. This will ensure no electrical stress and overheating of the variac. You can find both stepped variacs (I have an STR 5 position), or continuous controlled.

4) if you think you need 4" ducting and fan, get one that is 6". Lots of noise is reduced by bigger airflow area, Also true for the Carbon filter sucking noise.

5) Acoustic ducting does wonders for whooshing noise. The main noise comes from the exhaust end of the fan, there are silencers you can buy, but I've never seen one in action.

6) Make sure to have the least amount of 90º corners/turns running your ducting. Also, if possible, have the ducting do a straight line of about 1,5m before and after the fan

7) You can put foam around the fan, but I guarantee you it will do peanuts compared to a proper variac, or any of the above.

Combine all these and you will have a near silent operation. Also, as far as I am aware, the most silent fan around is the KSA. It suck ALOT more air that inline using less wattage. There are also models with inbuilt speed controller with thermostat. Beware, most of them don't come with it.

Hope it helps!
