Those root riots will give you issues in DWC.I used em once to sprout and had issues with 4 out of 16 that would not sprout and 2 that grew tails than died. and very sluggish growth first week.I read another guy on here used em and had to scrap his whole grow after a couple weeks.
I did not use Root Riots, they were Rapid Rooters in the first attempt. I have no doubt in my mind that they caused the drowning of the first seeds. This time I used Park's Bio-dome sponges and I don't think they had anything to do with the helmethead problem.

The size of the sample in this grow - 2 seeds is way too small to draw any conclusions one way or another.

I don't think I got the seed shell off of the Amphetamine soon enough to save it. It has been 12 hours and I don't see any chlorophyll in the seed head. I won't pronounce it dead until it falls over as I still have some hope.:help:

Mikballa - Welcome:

Nice plant.

I think its them sponges you are using.Rapid root is almost same thing as root riot. Its that brown material.
I dont think your helmet is issue.Ive had whole halfs break off at birth and seeds come up in a spiral turned backwards and ended up being my best plants. One i had lost both of the first rounded leaves when i pulled the helmet and ended up growing the first set anyway.I think that brown sponge just does not hold any air and ends up rotting the tail out.

Wisper:

I have germinated hundreds of vegetables and flowers using the Park's Bio-dome system and sponges. I germinate them indoors for transplant into the garden after the danger of frost is over. The Bio-dome sponge is very light and open compared to Rapid Rooters. I have also had about 95% success using them for cannabis. Amphetamine is the first failure and I am not counting her dead yet but she is not looking good.

From seed Day 16:

Amphetamine did not make it. :deadhorse:

Since it is two to three weeks faster than Narcotic Kush I may try to get another seed and restart her again?

NK looks a little small but other growers have reported a slow start with her.

Nutrient change to 40% of week 2 guidelines:

5 Gallons of carbon filtered water starting PPM 135

Dyna-Gro:

Pro-Tekt 5 ml

Foliage-Pro 15 ml

K-L-N 10 ml

Mag-Pro 1 ml

PH-Down as needed to 5.8

Botanicare:

Hydroguard 10 ml

Mammoth P 3 ml

Total PPM 440

Nutrient mixture is aerated overnight to stabilize PH.

Four cobs are running at 30 watts each 24" above canopy. I will be turning this up slowly over the next two weeks to 50 watts. Light schedule is 18/6.

Day 22 from seed:

The root system is not growing down into the reservoir as expected. I think they are being air pruned. I am going to add a top feed system at least until the roots are well down into the reservoir. Let’s see if this gets things going?

I have an 8 way manifold to accommodate my future farm.

Day 26 from seed:

Still small but showing improvement from the top watering in just four days.

Still not happy with what is going on here and I may have keyed in on the problem:

Copper Toxicity! I had (new one in process with all plastic parts) a brass bushing and needle valve on my top off tank. I did not think that this small amount of brass would be a problem but when sitting in 5.8 PH aerating water I think it is leaching too much copper.

Here is a description of copper toxicity and it fits what I am seeing:

Root Stunting:

Root stunting is characteristic of calcium deficiency, acidity, aluminum toxicity, and copper toxicity. Some species may also show it when boron deficient. The shortened roots become thickened, the laterals become stubby, peg-like, and the whole system often discolours, brown or grey.
Symptoms localized at shoot growing points.
New shoots unopened; young leaves distorted; dead leaf tips; pale green plant copper deficiency
New shoots withered or dead; petiole or stem collapse; shoots stunted; green plant calcium deficiency Young leaves pale green or yellow; rosetting or dead tip; dieback; dark green plant boron deficiency

I don't know if the damage is permanent. I will flush and change the nutes ASAP.

Sometimes it is easy to miss the obvious but with all of the seasoned growers reading these threads I am surprised no one chimed in on this?

Killed this grow today. Learned or relearned a lesson about having any copper, brass or aluminum in contact with your nutrient enriched water. Lower PH ranges leach these metals into your nutrients causing toxic levels to build up. Look at the pictures in this thread and you can see the results.

Onward and upward. I have started construction on my new grow space. I will start a new thread soon.
