Indoor DWC Amphetamine & Narcotic Kush

I had simular probs starting direct in the cubes in the system. If you start them on paper towels and put them in the cube when they've got a nice tap root, no more probs. Jiffy pellets are good if you want to start direct in your system.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Jiffy pellets have a PH problem and they tend to dissolve into the reservoir over time. This causes a bioload in the reservoir that is not desireable.

Have you ever looked at that tap root in the paper towel with a microscope? If you do you will see thousands of lateral root hairs that grow right into the paper towel fibers. then when you open the towel and then lift the sprout off you have stripped off many potential roots and shocked the seedling. Transplanting no matter how careful a person is also damages new roots at the time they are most vulnerable. It is best to start a seed right where it will spend its entire life. I am not saying you cannot do it your way I am saying it is better not to. Proving any of this is way beyond my scope of resources but I have had commercial experience growing organic vegetables. Any germinating system (I have tried may) that exposed the roots to potential damage reduced my saleable crop vs seeds that were just planted in the soil where they grew out. It just stands to reason that this would transfer to growing cannabis.

Yo Man'o'green, sorry to see it went this way.

I saw you silenced you air system, could you please gimme a picture and a little about how quit it is or isnt? I am looking for a efficient way to silence my 100mm and 125mm diameter exhaust fans so you dont hear anything. Thanks

It's a matter of personal choice.

But a stunted seedling will produce more than a dead one.

I totally agree with you on that.

I am willing to try a lot of new things many of which have ended in near or complete failure. I used to be a living soil proponent and I still think the tastiest weed I ever grew was in living soil but it has problems of its own especially indoors. It is either heavy or messy if you scoop and move it around. It is really only great for one grow then you need to move it outside for regeneration. Then there is the risk of bringing in pests which opens a whole world of troubles. That is why I moved to hydro. I have tried flood and drain, thin film, aeroponics and others. So far DWC has accomplished the greatest yield/quality combination other than living soil. It is the easiest for me because I can move the water in 2 gallon increments the weight of which does not strain my bad back. In my planned new grow room I will have it plumbed and won't have to lift water at all.

I am confident I can get the bio-dome sponge to work with these Current Culture net pots. They are really light and porous compared to the RRs. Stay tuned I will report it as it truly unfolds. I am not afraid to fail in full view and you can learn from my trials!

Happy Growing.

I used a 6" duct muffler after the fan outside of the tent. It is not totally quiet but much better. If you have the space use one in front and in back of the fan and wrap the fan in sound foam should get whisper quiet. My tent is not running as I wait for my beans as soon as I start up remind me and I will get some db readings.

I got my beans in the mail today so here we go with round 2 Day 0:

I rehydrated the Bio-dome sponges in PH 5.9 water. The pebbles were washed and PHed as well.

I am using just a couple of 5000K CFLs to warm the seeds and provide some light for their start. The COBs were just too hot for germination.
Happy growing!

Uro:

Go over to the Rollitup.org they have tons of info on COB Growing; it is not new and it is way more efficient than any other indoor lighting. It is not cheap to get started even if you build your own. Google Growmau5 and have a look at his "how tos" and "grows logs".

I have had a problem with this first grow with mine:
1. The seeds may have got too cold in storage as my refrigerator froze one time this past summer.
2. I had the lights turned up too high and the seedlings hit 93°F.
3. This is the first time I have used Rapid Rooters and one of the seed companies (can't remember which one) states not to use them because of a PH problem.

So I have reordered the seeds and will be restarting this grow as soon as they get here correcting all three of my suspected problems.

Stay tuned I'll get this grow done well.
tried them once and never again.tried them with clones and half the clones rotted.seeds i had 4 out of 14 sprouted tails and quit growing and 1 didnt even sprout.than the seedlings took forevor to get going in them.I threw em in the trash and went back to ph rockwool with 1/4 nutes soaked for 8 hrs. Also tried them with my tomatoes in soil and they just took forevor to get going.seems like the material is to dense and causes root issues not sure.
Glad to see im not the only one that had issues with root riots

Wisperer - Welcome!

I don't know if root riots are the same I have never tried them; my problem was with Rapid Rooters. I know soil guys that swear by them but it just got too soggy in my DWC method for keeping the germinating medium moist. I have used Bio-dome sponges for years in starting vegetables indoors for my outdoor organic garden. I am not going to claim 100% success with them as broccoli, eggplant and peppers are poor germinators but they have performed above expectation.

Happy Growing!

@ClockworkOrange :

I took some sound readings for you today:

ambient: 26db
Air pumps on: 37db
Exhaust Fan on: 45db

The readings were taken from about 5' from the tent; my air pumps are outside of the tent.
My wifes hearing is better than mine and she can no longer hear the tent running at night with the door closed to the tent room. This was the main reason I installed the muffler. Hope this helps.

The box is packed with sound foam around the 6" Hyper Fan:
