Lighting DIY led build using Bridgelux EB strips

Done for the night. Pretty happy so far but think I want some better thermal paste before Im happy, this stuff i got was fucking terrible to work with. I need a roll instead of these stupid pads.

Measuring out the strips, going with 2inch gap

Had heaps of excess so trusty tin snips time. Probably should have done this in the garage but cbf lol.

Marked a spot for the driver to go on the back

Not the greatest mounting solution but used what I had laying around will do for now

These stupid thermal pads, had to cut them up so I had enough but yeah I need a roll.

Almost there, got a slight bend but that's what you get using .5m thick aluminium sheet. Should be fine.

All 6 on, will finish up tomorrow with the wiring. Might end up getting some L angle for the tops and bottoms of the sheet and give me something to put mounting holes on, keep everything more rigid. See how i feel in the morning lol.

yes i would recommend to use a good thermal paste ( silver or gold. both arent expensive but work waaaaay better than these crappy pads. Even the 2 compound thermal past that glues the parts together has better characteristics than these pads. Maybe it is just a personal thing but i want the heat to be transmitted the best possible way ). If you screw them strips onto the aluminium then thermal paste is best.

Also try to cover the complete strip with aluminium for better cooling. You would get hot endings and a cool center which maybe results in a colorshift or damage.

Yeah im not too worried about the heat these strips don't even really need a heatsink at all it was more for mounting purposes. But your right about the pads, i do have some paste i use for my pc so I'll probably just use that. I'll check temps anyway when I fire it up tomorrow but doubt it's gonna be an issue from what I've seen of the others using these strips, some are just running them open with no issues.

She lives! All done. Brighter then a thousand sun's I feel like I should have worn some of those NASA goggles to look at the eclipse with. Still have another one to make but gotta wait for more thermal tape but gonna stick some clips and rope ratchets on this and hang it in the closet for my mephisto grow hopefully if my seeds arrive before Sep 1! Feel free to ask any questions. Pretty easy build and really happy with the end result. 300w at the wall.

Hey!
Very cool, nicely done. Strips are new to me. I like them. Are you going to add a frame type of thing, sorry if you already mentioned it?
I hear you guys on the thermal stuffs. I have been a fan of Arctic Silver for PC, CPU use but have always used Keratherm pads on my amps. Need to insulate and be a really good thermal transfer.on those big power amps like the F5!

Again, real nice job and thanks for posting it!!
:slap:

Yeah im glad I found out about them, $13 each and just as good if not better then cobs. Also check out the Samsung strips they are pretty good. There's a fair bit of info over at diyleds and rio if you want to do some reading. Pm me if you want i can link you the thread I found out about these lol.
I was planning on just leaving this without a frame but I think its just a bit too flimsy with the 0.5m aluminium sheet so I'll probably grab a couple of L angles and strap to the tops and bottom to give it some stability.

If i was gonna do this again I'd not be so cheap and just get a bit thicker stuff and have it cut to measure so I'd not have overhang but hey it's a cheap quick diy lol.
Hopefully will clean out the wardrobe this is going in tomorrow and get some pics of it hanging for you guys.

So i think im finished or im gonna scrap it and start again. Thoughts and advice welcome! I got some L angle ALU to put along the sides, so I could also put some hooks on it so I could hang it. Only problem is it flexes a shitload still so the strips on the edges are going to be more shining sideways then down. At its current height it's 35 inches from the top of the pot and it was getting 20k lux all around the area at the top of the pot, if i moved it to 18 inches I was getting 30k lux. Any suggestions? Not sure if I can add anything else to make it not flex so much, might just get some thicker aluminium cut to size and just start over. The strips are now screwed in also. Currently mounted like this, fits nicely in the little closet, still got another one of these to build.
