Indoor Dark Devil in soil

Nah no runoff. You fill the perlite bed with water and the soil wicks it up. The soil stays moist the entire time, you just keep the kiddie pool filled with water. And extra aeration is needed in the soil(extra 15-20% perlite)

Here's an example from my older grow. Just a 2"x6" frame with pond liner and filled with perlite to hold water. Pots sit on top. You just refill the perlite bed.

With that kind of setup I had issues with roots growing into the perlite.

I found a (kind of) fix for it by lining landscaping fabric over top the wick tray. I just lift the pot and the roots tear off.

I've been watching a lot of build a soil videos and I wanna try their 3.0 and light recipe. It's the same price at my local place as Coast of Maine.

The kiddie pool should work about the same way as earth boxes, but a good bit cheaper.($12 for a 42" kiddie pool, maybe $80 in perlite) Has the benefit of using fabric pots, smaller or larger size pots, as well as a much larger water capacity.

I used auto water bases with wicks and I usually wait till reservoir is almost empty the. Top water periodically to flush old out and keep ph in check then I can collect runoff and test ppm if needed 5 gallon is nice but I recently started a strawberry popesicle in a 10 gallon fabric pot on a milk crate base that I made for free. I bought 4 ac infinity fell In love with results, and now all my plants use this style of bases I had roots in reservoir through bottom of 10 gallon pot in 12-14 days. U don’t want them filling up with roots either I’d suggest get better bags not cheaper ones that was what I did lol. I have a pineapple daddy around day 60 in last pic it’s almost ready on my milk crate system worked amazing.
Do you ever have to water from the top with these systems or does it get 100% of the water it needs from the wicks thru the res? Im very interested in this style of growing!

Also do you feed with water or is this setup for “super soils” sorry for all the Qs and thank you for your patience 🙏❤️🌱

I've had success just allowing the bed to stay filled and no top watering. Extra aeration is needed this way though, maybe 40% of the total soil should be perlite/aeration. I used to run water only Coots soil(1/3 Worm, Peat, Perlite, with coots kit from build a soil) mix Sea of Green 3g pots. Yield was never more than a couple ounces a plant, but I had 30-40 perpetually (planting each week) in a 4x8' at one point in time, cranked out as much as I could in my limited space.

This thread should be water only on the wick bed, fed by the dehumidifier and tap water.

For lower plant count and larger plants, you'd probably want 7/10g+ pots to go for water only. I've seen build a soil do almost water only(I think 2 top dressings total) with their soils in 10g pots with 1 bag each(7.5g of soil). I want to try something like that in the future. For now I don't mind cramming a few more plants than necessary.

If you haven't yet, check the build a soil on youtube, tons of information there. Mostly centered around photoperiods, there are a few auto grows though.

I’ve used both the plant pictured is a living soil and does great I recommend top seeing again around stretch and should help carry you through. I only use clean water in reservoir and feed from top then empty base and fill with fresh 6.5 to 6.8 ph water. I also did 3 with pro mix hp peat moss and all were great. I went from 2-4 oz per plant to my last two were 9 + and 10 almost 11 oz. Promix seemed to help a lil more but I like both options. No pro. On questions that’s why we are all here. I was exactly where you were as were most these guys. People say auto are easier haha easier to stunt and ruin yield. So any questions feel free I am a lil familiar with this but I read where dankerson had good formula for soils. The roots growing that far to get water creates bigger root mass thus bigger plant. Just if using living soil u either have to feed or keep adding worm castings. In promix I keep my ph around 6.0 no more then 6.2. If water sits more then 48 hrs heck that phi check daily it will creep and then you see signs In leaves. You will do fine you have bountiful knowledge all around you just waiting for you to ask. Happy growing

I am learning that they are definitely not easier! Not hard by any means, but they do require a bit more care from seed to veg than photos ive run.

Yeah definitely and feeding each plant is so different for me some hardly handle anything and others are hogs. In stretch a whole gallon drained in 24 hrs. On my thorpes gold. They will drain all stored nutrients very fast through transition to flower and that’s usually when I try start using compost teas and top dress it helps a lot and ph is biggest killer of u aren’t used to it I also have pretty high ppm tap water but recently found fresh water spring 1 mile from house with a ppm 11. Going to give it a try with jacks 321 and Epsom got some good quality fat buds with basics. And temp and humidity big one. I also use azos in bottom of bags put an inch or two in then sprinkle coat and I have done with and without and it appears to help roots get water. Faster the better noticeable growth daily and just with basics you can do very well with this setup. Good luck u will be fine and then it’s an art to grow big autos and I’m working towards 1 lb 1 auto without dwc im feeling good about next round already in making.

I keep a very active soil biology going. Multiple mycos and bennies, that help make nutrients available when things are out of ph range, but i still like to ph my feedings so everything is available immediately. I stunted my indoor plants because my humidity was too low, i knew it too but because they looked fine i thought they would be fine, nope! Learned my lesson, by week 4 when i got everything dialed in it was too late. But i want to finish the plants so i can have an idea of what the mephistoreoz is and does and so far its the the most resinous pf all the strains im growing so i def believe it was worth it. Next grow i will have everything dialed in the tent before they even go in! Lol

Let me know I’m dropping dosidelirium tonight. Mephistorez was on the order too hard choice. Curious looks frosty

Its easily got 3-4x the frost of the Gorilla Cookies by Fastbuds, Gelato by fastbuds, or Dark Devil by Dr Seeds that i have growing that are looking amazing! and are the the same age as my indoor plants.
