it can be done a little easier and faster using perma culture techniques. but a lotta work up front. just far far more sustainable and easier to maintain over time. a living native fruit forest...sound kewl eh?! wished I could manage one here.

I am going for a permaculture design certificate hopefully this summer, or possibly next year. I have a ton of projects going. Too many! I believe that I can make marginal rocky slopes produce fruit orchards with swales built from "hugelkultur" beds. Knock over the existing junk trees and invasives, use the biomass in either whole or chipped form to make 4 foot swales on contour on the hill. Then dig in uphill of the swale and cover it with the dirt. This will catch rainwater, hold it, and maintain the slope. Also provide access, build up over the problematic soil, and sequester TONS of carbon.

are you going to hire an arborist ? or your just taking down trees you dont want? you get certified gimme a shout man, love to talk with you a little.

The plan is to be the arborist. I just don't have the equipment I need yet. I will be making lumber from the valuable trees. I have oak, and cedar. The cedras may become a communal home for laborers and students. The orchard will be made from soft maple, privet, honeysuckle, poplar, small trees, etc.

okay.LOL you have any training? man that can get messy sometimes with erosion and the systems of roots and digging. good luck broseph ,seriously. Ive done tree farming and landscaping and nursey work and know about(some about rather) permaculture and KNF practices. and I wouldnt touch em personally. best of luck.

I do have training. I have a plant science degree, and enough mechanical experience that I can repair and design equipment and irrigation. I have been busy gathering skills for a long time. Since January it feels like all my years of prepping have finally started to get all the pieces in order to start this thing.

oh I know you do bro LOL i was just saying when you get your ticket lemme know. I got a few things ZI would like to bounce off you if you dont mind. I just hybridize several methods for excellent productivity really. thats all man. tons here have a billion more kinds of training than ill ever have bro LOLO

Plant them now

The best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago.

I have 2 peaches, 2 figs, 2 apples, 2 plums, 2 cherries, 2 paw paw, and dozens of Jap Maples. I love grafting trees. I'm bringing home a Peaches and Cream Jap. Maple in a week or two. Oh yeah, an old pear that I cut a 1/3 of it off every year, and so far no edible fruit, but this year looks good.
I have no room for trees but someday I hope to. I do look forward to seeing pictures of yours though.
