What is the problem with crowding plants in a tent? I recently was able to fit 4- 3 gallon pots in a 2.3ftx2.3ft tent and grew fine. I think 5 pots will fit.

Why is the science behind crowding the plants? A single plant is basically crowded when you look at each stem so why not fit all you can? Plants in the wild are often touching too.

The problem would be that I can think off is airflow and this creating a more suitable environment for mold. Also some people have other things inside the tent like humidifiers and dehumidifiers and such things so less space.. from my own experience I’ve noticed plants don’t grow as wide when crowded.

I think most are better off putting as many as they can in to maximize square footage. Air flow can be a problem but many place their fans vertically in the space in error where better air flow and mixing works with fans mounted above.

You do what you can with the space you have but packing plants in with the right setup isn't a problem when the canopy is managed properly.

SOG is a technique where you place 2-5 plants per sqft to maximize space. In a great setup, it will yield better other methods, minimize the chance for mold/pest, less plant biomass to prune, efficient use of light, etc. If the environment is setup well along with great canopy management then there's no real concern just benefits.

Here are a couple grows that will give you a reference as to how many plants you can put in a small tent.

I agree with everything @Death The Cultivator mentioned but would also consider how much dirt you need in a space to get maximum yield. In a high density SOG grow you can definitely grow 4-5 plants per sq ft, but you also wouldn’t use 3 gallon pots.

In a 2.3ft x 2.3ft tent you don’t need 12-15 gallons of dirt to maximize your yield for that space. You could probably grow 9-12 plants in there if you sized the pots down to 1 gallon, but 12 would probably be better in a 3 x 3.

Aim for the plants to fill the space, but you don’t need to fill the space with dirt to make that happen. I use a couple 3 x 3 tents, I usually have somewhere between 7-10 gallons of medium in my tents for a grow. That might be one 7-10 gal pot for one monster sativa plant 3-4 2 or 3 gal pots or 6-9 one gallon pots for small fast indica. Regardless of the pot size and number of plants I harvest somewhere between 15-20oz per tent. For a tent your size with appropriate light you should be able to hit maximum yield with 8-9 gallons of medium maximum IMO.

How much light would you need in one of these 5 sq ft MOL tents to max out the space/yield? I have a Niemi HLG 135 Rspec clone. Same driver and board as the HLG so MAYBE as much as 150W actual draw from the wall even though the driver is a 120.
