Indoor Carbon filter life-span

some filters have more carbon in as well as they have been compacted better

When my liberty is at stake i am not going to mcgiver a filter. This is one of the worst to do wrongly. Seriously guys the carbon filter is whats stopping you getting nicked. Do not scrimp on it. If you DIY one and it doesn't get the job done 100% then you could be screwed with no re-do's.

Err on the side of caution and buy the biggest best filter you can afford to buy, if you are going to build yer own then make sure it goes through stringent testing.

My 600m3 p/h fan pulls the air through a 50cm long and 6 inch wide at opening filter, if i burn incense in front the of the filter i can only smell clean scrubbed air on the output. If you try this and can smell incense then you got a problem, either the filter is done, hasn't been built right or your putting too much air through it too fast.

My filters run 24/7 from the moment they are put in and my last 4 inch filter lasted a year with a 400m3 ph fan before i could smell the incense.

im with riz on this one..... I made a few filters and its just not the same.... its close but not fullproof and i dont need johnny law at my grow door asking questions. filters start at 50-60 bucks just buy one when you start to smell a difference and your Gucci.

riz has a point , but depending on your situation , a DIY filter is adequate . For example , my nearest neighbors are 1/4 mile away and my current filter exhausts into my house , not the outdoors . So for me I can get away with no filter if I so choose , but I keep using one for rare occasion of having company over .

For many people , it IS important to have zero smell because of proximity to others . As was said , if you DIY a filter , thouroughly test it .

I'm using a 4" Phat filter and a 4" fan. It in my small 2 x 2.5' room where I grow 4 autos at a time. It's been installed for about 9 months now and still going strong. It has a cloth sleeve that slides over the whole filter and serves to catch the dust before it gets into the filter itself. Given that I run my fan on low speed most of the time I expect it should last at least 1.5 years, if not longer. Cost was $50.

Lots of good info here. I had tried making a DIY filter before I saw how they make commercial ones (using the crappy thin sheet filters you can get at home depot) and it worked sort of for a few days and then just did nothing (not enough carbon my guess). But after I saw how they're made, I will definitely be refilling the one I just ordered (or try to refill it).

And yeah, my grow space is tiny for my fan (can exchange all the air 3 times a minute on full blast 175 cfm in a 60cf area), I keep it at about 30% ish so I should get some solid life out of my filter. Hooray!

Hey Muddy where did you get that Fan and Filter set up? I need one for my small grow space 2 x 3.

I've been buying most of my supplies from these people for a few years now. Good prices and service, fast shipping. Most of my orders get to me in 2 days from Ohio, UPS ground. http://www.plantlightinghydroponics.com/. Both the fan and filter came from them.
