Bob's Journey into Hybridisation and Genetics - For Dummies

After working on the table I turned the lights in the lungroom back on. Yes! those 150Watt Cobs that are turning my lungroom into a sauna and my tent into a dessert, which my Night Queens prefer, might I add... As soon a I can harvest the White Widow (Which won't be long now) there will be a place to put the 'males'. They can't do the remaining Night Queens no harm as they haven't fully matured yet and by the time they are the ladies will be long gone and probably drying/freezing somewhere :goodluck:
The Barney's troopers will by then be inside the greenhouse. First we'll see how far we get with connecting the heatbed/table....But very soon we will be rid of that excess heat :coffee:

This little one is one I'm conserned about. His reaction to the STS is very acute compared to it's siblings. Sadly enough I've only this specimen, but I already know what Sawney is going to say and he's right... Such a bad specimen shouldn't be used for pollen...:deadhorse:

Hey guys :toke:

I got so much done on the heatbed/table build today, that tomorrow I can start testing the cable. Afterwards I can put the 50kg of river sand I have on the ready on top of that. I'm just wondering if I should put pandafoil between the heat cable and the sand? or leave it out completely. I'm not worried that the cable should get wet as this cable is specially used in large terrariums, but rather the table underneath. Mhmmm...choices... Come on peeps give your opinions :thanks:

I really dig your heatbed design. I might steal it.... :headbang:

You have some talent mate for D.I.Y it's a lot of effort to the cause and I respect that massively. :pighug:
Regarding the male that's a bit less perfect , you know I would banish it. But if you really need to keep that strain going you could keep it then work on the generation of seeds it produces . Keep it for a time when you have the space to work on it. ? It can be done it's just a time game.

That's why I put it here buddy

Thanks brother. I like to do things myself and add something to this...wait a minute I'll show you

The male is history :muahaha: He doesn't know it yet as I've still have to go to the tent. But that "job" will be done tonight when the kids go to bed...

I did finish the table today. :woohoo1::woohoo::woohoo1:

It's currently warming up as there is 50kg of river sand (which is wet) that needs to heat up. So I set it to 27.5°C and now we're waiting to see if it can reach the set temperature. And more importantly keep it over night. Oh, did I say the table is controllable via the display (above picture), but also via the Tuya app on Android or Iphone.

Before I put the sand on I ran a full-on test and measured the cable...This is after 35minutes straight on 240V. Now I'm sure that's the maximum temperature the cable can get, which is a safe temperature and can't cause any fires :wiz:

As promised I removed not one, but two weaklings... Both had the "dwarf growth thing" going on and that's not something we want in our genetics pool...
We are left over with seven healthy young "males" :shooty:

I forgot to sow my ladies yesterday. I had made a calendar, but forgot to couple it with my account...:wall:
So what do we do, we sow today and adjust the calendar :yay::crying:
These are the most seeds I've ever sown in my whole life! Almost 60 seeds. That's kinda exciting...

Well below are two of my first crosses I've made. In each cotton swipe sit 5 seeds.

On the left another of my crosses and also here sit five seeds per cotton swipe. On the right two strains I got as freebees with an order I once made which will remain nameless and a selved strain from company that doesn't exist anymore. Each cotton swipe has four seeds in them.

Well...That's it folks...

Oh yeah...The pads...Completely forgot about them. :wall: Luckily it's only been one day :haha:
For today just one picture to show I started to squeeze the stems between each node. Never done that, but now's a good time as any I suppose
It was so hard holding my hand between the COBS and the plants and keep a steady hand while pressing the button on my phone I only got one good picture. The rest was out of focus or had lines in the picture...

Hey fellow wannabreeders :toke:

I got a lot done today.
giphy.gif

This morning I made the trays out of the plastic barrels. Afterwards I cut the rest up in smaller pieces so there will be no questions at the dump when I drop them off. Then I had to go to physio. When I got back home my alarm went off. "Check Seeds"
Damn, forgot about that... To the study I went. When I checked the cotton pads I was pleasantly surprised seeing most of the seeds had hatched.

Only one cultivar I made last run, which was most likely not dried long enough, had a bad hatching percentage. Probably mold.
Out of 15 seeds only 3 seeds had a small tail, approx. the length all other seeds had. Six seeds where split open and a tail was visible inside and the rest didn't make it.
I kept only the three seeds with the tail. If a seedling hasn't hatched in three days it isn't worth breeding with it. So that was a serious culling from the get-go.
1652444827965_small.jpg

All other F1's I made showed hybrid vigor, because for both 102-F1 and 103-F1 the hatchings where 100% :woohoo1:

1652444827959_small.jpg

I didn't water the pouches as I had to move them manually from inhouse to the greenhouse when I was done filling and sowing them. So I watered when I got there. They gobbled up several liters of water and then some more...As I'm typing this the level in the pouches is at 1/3 high. I also gave each seed 10ml of water with a syringe so they already had some wet earth to tap into....
1652444827973_small.jpg

And finally a group picture. Smile
1652444827979_small.jpg

I'm now back in-house and gonna roll me a fatty and chill out :baked:

Hey wannabreeders :toke:

Today the temperature rose to 45°C /113°F and that with the windows open and the outside of the greenhouse whited. So needless to say I was a bit worried that I was boiling the germs I planted in the pouches, but this couldn't be further from the truth...
1652544163776c_small.jpg

Everywhere seedlings start to show their heads...
1652544163776b_small.jpg

...The temperature of the pouches didn't go over 25°C / 77°F and the soil was at the warmest part of the day 27°C / 81°F...
1652544163773b_small.jpg

...so the perfect environment for hatching I should say
1652544163770b_small.jpg

As you can see there are pouches that have two seedlings in them. I've tried to sow a seedling with a long and a short tail together...
1652544163766b_small.jpg

...That way the chance of one good and one bad in the same pouch rises and I don't loose to much material while culling...
1652544163758b_small.jpg

...In that case I just need to pull the seedling out. The roots that remain will become food for the strongest seedling. :coffee:
1652544163755c_small.jpg

This 103 is really showing hybrid vigor. Almost all the germs have showed their heads or have even shed theirs...
1652544163755b_small.jpg

1652544163751c_small.jpg

All the double O five's have hatched and I'm happy they all did. I might put one in a 7gallon fabric pot as this was one of my favorites from last year.
Such an activating cultivar...
1652544163751b_small.jpg

...One thing on my agenda is to do an inline cross with this one giving me enough seeds for the future and I've also researched some really interesting crosses to make with these...
