Auto Seeds Autoseeds random discussion thread (for semi-off topic chat relating to autoseeds products)

Sorry it took a bit to reply

This is kinda a rant that is directed towards just generalized public and thus some of the text may not be something directed towards you :).
Anyway, here's what I, and my friends, have experienced....

There have been a large number of mould issues in the area in the last month or two due to extremely wet conditions.
Some of the issues are moulds (and generalized infection) growing on the outside of the pot and then growing on to the bottom/sides of the plant and its roots causing bacterial, fungal, viral or other issues causing root rot.
One of the early indications of mold on your pot will be fuzzy white stuff on your pot. There's a difference between hard water stains/nutrient salts run off and mold.
Nutrient salts will literally look like salt (NaCl) when you look at it. It will be a white to slightly off white (a yellowish white is possible) salt which doesn't come off if you lightly rub it for about 5-20 seconds. Also if you scrape the excess nutrient salts with your finger nail it will be just turn into like a powder that's a little rough feeling like... well... salt (NaCl).
Now, mouldy plants and their pots (again, discussing cloth pots here) may have a wispy and cotton/fiber looking fluff around its edges that also looks like a spider web. One of the easiest ways to know what mould looks like is to grow out mushrooms. Once you see a few successes and, more importantly, a few failures growing mushrooms, you will learn a lot of different moulds and such. This knowledge will allow you to view unique infections in a jar without causing contamination to your house/grow.
One of the other big issues you will see is the "mean green" mould. This mould is distinctive. It looks similar to black mould while it starts growing, but turns green and slime like (almost like really gross algae). Green Mould is VERY BAD.
When the black mould grows it gets a slight dark royal blue tint to the edges of the mould growth. If, during initial growth, the infection is fast, the mould can contaminate the whole grow within 24 to 48 hours making you say "bye bye" to all your hard work. Infection can come about for seemingly no reason known to you, the grower.
Another thing you can notice with mould is what i call "odd mould".
Odd Mould is nothing more than mould that isnt the main three i discussed (wispy/white mould, "mean green" and the deadly black mould). Main types of odd mould are the deadly red/pink mould and the even weirder (and very rare if you're not in a specific part of the country that can be revealed if discussed privately via pm) purple mould that (as stated) only grows locally. This purple mould is something very interesting, and it is such a rare thing that it makes me shocked. This has been known locally by growers to be called "catfish disease" because the first instance of the mould/fungus in grows was by me as an accident after handling a cat fish from this specific location. I accidentally took the infection back to my grow from the kitchen. This is why you ALWAYS take precautions specifically against mould/fungus. While catfish disease it is more of a bacteria, the local university has identified it as a mould that is in a symbiotic relationship with some bacteria.
Obviously with mould (and bacterial) infections, you want to trash (preferably burn) the plant. Another thing you want to do is trash the pot. It may seem like it would be cheaper to just keep the pot and clean it with bleach, but it can still be infected and can destroy a grow after you just restarted... A new pot is as cheap or cheaper than a single seed so it is worth the time to buy. Obviously you want to clean the entire grow area (tent or whatever have you) by sterilizing with bleach (aka comet/clorox/etc) and letting it air out for a day or so.

On another side note, locally there was a huge stink bug infestation in 2017, this was not an issue as they dont do anything to my plants. HOWEVER, I noticed that this year there was a gnat infestation in my grow but once the stink bugs started moving in, they started eating the gnats and the gnat problem resolved. I have no infestation now, but I keep vinegar, brown sugar and dawn dish soap in a few canning jars with open lids in case there is an issue.

Anyway, that was my sermon for now.
Thanks everyone for letting me preach to the choir :)
What are ways to decrease the chances of developing mold that you know of? I keep alot of air moving around and bring in fresh air from outside instead of from the room. And good lighting with IR light seems to stop mold from growing. Also temperature and humidity play a big role and I always maintain mid 70s to 80 degrees Fahrenheit during lights on and 65 to 70 lights off. And dont let my RH go above 60% 50 seems ideal. Any more tips you know of?

Those are all good things to do and are very good in general for abatement of many mould/similar diseases. Keeping your grow clean and tidy is a good way to help. When you are watering plants, make sure you go slow so you don't have a ton or runoff that is just sitting there in a great environment for infectious diseases to incubate. Another one is to not constantly water and water properly your plants. Let the plants dry out for a bit before watering them again. It helps them stay happy too. If you get a mould problem, you can try to drop the RH to something about 20% and just mist the leaves only if they start to taco/turn crispy/etc. Lower the RH for a week and that would help. But as you know... Once you have mould. you gotta be safe and healthy and toss the plants no matter what it means. Your health means a lot, but smoking mouldy bud for a month is not safe when you can buy or get from someone else.

oh @CoviklaFlaire , also you can easily abate issues if you simply put the pot up on something like an upside down milk crate or soda pop 2 litre 6 unit plastic crates (that is what i use) and then having adequate airflow as it will keep the problems at bay but it will also encourage air pruning by the cloth pot from the flow of air.

guess it depends on how much power you use as to what the issue would be. And no you/your power company shouldnt be able to tell your power usage when you're not hooked to the grid (aka they wont know if your using your solar panels). Now... To get it to be the best and most natural looking, you would have a deep cycle battery and just store the electricity and slowly release the electricity back to the grid at a regular interval... I have suggested to people they buy a few bitcoin miners to make the power look like a small mining operation... I just keep the lights on 24/7 but I dont have a huge grow (a mars hydro 600 and a 300 led and 8 plants shoved together in a tight SOG) but keeping my lights on constantly-24/7 (at least with lower wattage usage on my lights) looks to the power company to be a computer or something like (as I said) a bitcoin miner hooked up and running.
Again, this information is only for those who are doing it legally. Of course I don't encourage illegal growing ;)
The solar panels and turbine have to go through my service to power my setup just in case they dont provide enough power on certain days it can pull juice from the house and I know people that get paid by the power company for putting more power into the grid than they use. So therfore they have to be able to see the power consumption. The only way to stay off the grid completely is to run a generator as a secondary powersource. The battery bank holds alot of juice but power fluctuations also damage lights and other electronics wich is why the service is better. Im gonna have to find a employee and ask them how their meters work of just get the serial number off it and do some research.

As far as electric goes I have 6 people in my house 4 kids 2 adults. They all have TVs and games consoles etc. Plus dads:

1x 4" 430m3h extractor
1x 4" inline duct for intake
2 x 7" fans
1 x 450w Dual cfl
1x 250 dual cfl

Running 24/7 plus my entertainment system as I'm up all hours bills around £120 a month. Anyway British Gas only bother me when my direct debit is too low for the usage or when I get my disability warm home thing, got a smart meter too. I wouldn't worry about utility companies if your in the UK that is.

Im not in uk and the power companys gotten 4 guys this year alone by tipping off the police. It should be legal here soon or at least I hope.

Thats why I love my shitty country, If you pay your el. bill they dont give a fck how much power you are spending..

Yeah same, I'd go as far as to say if I stopped growing for a month they'd probably ask me what's wrong British utility companies only care about £££ and meter fiddlers obviously haha.

Having said that I have toyed with the idea of solar like tylerdurden88 you should start a DIY thread or something if you do I'd like to make my grow more eco friendly.

In order for you to be off grid and still be living in the area where you got to be metered you're going to need a large battery Bank you got to have one you're never going to get away from that and yes they do have sophisticated devices that can actually look at your house and see what kind of power you are using and calculate how much . they've had these devices since the late 80s and 90s and I'm sure they're very much more high-tech than what they used to be back when I knew of them.
I used to be a Ham operator Amateur radio operator. There's a lot of devices out there that the general public does not know about they can detect what channel your TV's on what Channel you're FM radio AM radio any radio you have is on and those devices can even triangulate if they're receiving a transmission. But there's many things that the governments have. In the cars and trucks that have this technology in them. And they look just like everyday cars you can't even tell they're Uncle Charlie driving by.FCC.

The batteries you need there's all different kinds you don't have to spend a great deal of money and buy lithium batteries you can buy lead acid Marine deep cycle batteries or you can spend the big bucks and get gel sealed batteries there's so many different kinds whatever your budget dictates. You want to have enough amp hours to run all of your equipment for the minimum at least time of 18 + hours I would suspect that would be the minimum and if you wanted to to have it do that same amount for two or three days depending on how you are recharging those batteries whether you are solar power charging them combination wind and solar or combination wind solar and your local utility through a battery charging system and I say that the local utility is only your backup charging system because you are in fear of your power people. And I would not suggest talking to any of your power people just for that reason don't talk to any other employees of your power company or any utility. Don't let any of them know anything about that because if you do now you're suspect number one.
PM me if you want any more gorilla suggestions I'll help you best I can.

Im a contractor and do residential wiring so I have been lowering draw from everything in my household lights to appliences by buying energy efficent. But certain seasons use more electricity such as summer. Air conditioning uses alot of energy. I might have to do out with the dwc and just go coco coir then my lights and fans would be it. Only other way is to rent a house for growing and not live in it and im not at That level not yet anyway. Lol
