Hey all, rookie questions incoming...

In the process of getting ready to grow, have everything except seeds which should be arriving this week or next. Northern Lights auto's from Phoenix Seeds.

First question:
I live in a basement suite in Canada, right now we're in the depths of winter and things are freezing cold and the humidity is low. In my suite it usually hovers around 18C-20C, but my 2x4 tent is sitting in a utility room where the temps inside the tent tend to hover around 16C (although I've seen them go as low as 14C) with the lights off. When the lights are running, the temps hang around a cozy 24C-27C and the humidity can hit around 50%-60%.

I'd rather not run a heater, since my utilities are paid as part of my flat-rate monthly rent to my landlord and I don't want my utility bills suddenly jumping and causing him to ask questions. My rental agreement doesn't specifically forbid cannabis growing and my landlord has never been a problem, but all the same I'm a private person and I'd rather he didn't know. From my calculations the setup I have running now shouldn't cause a jump of more than roughly $10 a month. But, running a heater would cause that cost to climb considerably more. Not to mention the added cost and hassle of purchasing and setting up some kind of heating.

I figured if I can run the lights 24/7, the temps should stay in a good range for the plants.

So, I was hoping to get some input from folks that have run 24 hour light cycles on their auto's. I've searched around and found people that say it's no problem at all, and others that say it shouldn't be done. I'd like to hear from people that have done it, and how they found it performed. Did it hurt the plants or yields, or did it end up fine?

Second Question:
Related to the first, if I run my ventilation fan 24/7 it can reduce the temps in the tent back down to around 18C and sucks nearly all the humidity out of the tent.

I was wondering if I could run my ventilation on a schedule. For argument's sake let's say I run the fan for 1 hour at a time, every 2 hours. Has anyone tried something like that and had it work? Or is it a fail waiting to happen? One issue could be, I imagine, a lack of fresh CO2 being cycled into the tent.

Apologies for the rookie questions, and thanks in advance for any knowledge the good folks here can share with me.

I run 18/6 without issues but have run 24/7 and it didn't hurt or help. Which is the reason most growers don't. Why waste the watts if it doesn't help.

In your situation I believe will help though, as for the fan I run a ac infinity cloudline with a temp and humidity controller. You can set it up to come on and go off with temps and humidity or a timer. Mine is set to come on only when humidity goes above 60% because I'm in veg and flower right now.

I've ran 24 and 18/6 but I believe strong PAR diminishes the need for longer light schedule.

The temperatures aren't horrible and 4 hours of maybe 16F won't do any harm.

What light do you have?

I’m up in Canada as well, and just finished a week of -45c temps :nono:. I got my plants going in the basement as well right now. Lights are on 24/0 to keep the heat up, and I run a small humidifier attached to an Inkbird to keep humidity up. My exhaust fan is just a small 4” with a speed controller, so I can fine tune it, and not suck all that warm, humid air out of the tent!

Before changing to Autocobs and quantum boards, I ran my led lights 24/7 for years and liked that schedule best.

Thanks for the advice! I'm running a 6" VIVOSUN inline fan with a built-in speed controller paired to a 6" carbon can. I've mounted the fan and carbon can outside the tent, with the fan outlet running direct to the filter. Efficiency is reduced in that config, but the 6" fan overpowers my 2x2x4 tent so losing some efficiency probably won't make a difference. Wish I had the funds for a Cloudline, because that would be ideal. Hopefully after a couple grows I'll have some spare cash to upgrade a couple things.

I currently use 20 on 4 off. I have run 24/7 and see no advantage or disadvantage. If you need to go 24/7 to keep your heat up, by all means do it.:smoking:

Thanks for the help! It's great to hear from someone that's done it and did not see any particular cons to running it 24/7.

Thanks for your input! I'm running this light: Amazon product

I had to set up my grow on a real tight budget, and there was an Amazon warehouse deal that put that light just under $80CAD so I decided to start with that one. The PAR at 18" is (supposedly) 412.

If the plants would be okay with a few hours of chilly temps, I'd be happy running it at 20/4. If I don't need to run my ventilation during the lights-out period that would help keep the heat in the tent while the lights are off.

Thanks for your advice! I see you're also suffering from these miserable temps, this week is supposed to shoot back up to around -10C so you can find me sitting in a lawn chair enjoying the heat .

If I could go back in time, I would have grabbed a 4" fan instead of the 6". Even with the built-in speed controller the 6" is a beast for my 2x2x4 tent. I'm guessing that's why the fan sucks out the heat and moisture fairly quick.

Thanks for the first-hand experience! I'm feeling better now that I've heard from a few people who've run 24/7 without negatively affecting their plants.

Again, thanks everyone for your excellent advice and knowledge. Every time I think I'm "ready" to grow, something else comes up that causes me some concern. It's hard not to overthink this stuff!

With that light you are better off running it at 24/7. Cold temps will slow the metabolism but your temps won't kill anything.

I think most homes are an average of 400ppmbof c02 and your tent is not sealed. I wouldn't worry about getting intake and exhaust correct especially if you are in a rough range of VPD

At 76-80f and 50-60% humidity you could stay there the whole grow and be fine. VPD is more for c02 setups because of the amount of control needed but a general idea of temperature and humidity in relation to your plant helps a lot.

Thanks for that information and the chart! That's a big help, I have a tendency to over-think things and want everything to be "perfect" the first time I do it (an unpleasant side effect of depression/anxiety disorder). But everyone's advice has helped me form a better perspective on growing, and accept that if things don't turn out exactly how I thought for my first grow it'll still be a great learning experience.

It's a balancing act of what you can understand, afford, and realistically do. There's so much to figure out at first, and people do their best, but everyone's situation is unique.
