One thing I was told is that if the leaves are yellow from a deficiency, don't clip them. If the plant is pulling mobile nutrients from the leaf, clipping it will just move the problem to a different leaf.
I am extremely guilty of clipping leaves to make it look better. Also if it's not a deficiency it's probably ok.
