Hello afn hydro fam!



After many failed coco grows I've decided to give RDWC a try. I've grown a photo in a 5 gal DWC bucket and it ended in root rot but it was still one of the best yielding plants I've ever grown. Tired of failing with coco I've decided to go back to DWC. I figure my first try actually went damn well minus the root rot toward the end of the grow. This time I've dumped a bunch of money into building a small RDWC setup and a chiller. After many trips to amazon and HD I've finally completed my first real DIY project and I'm so damn excited lol. ;D

ok enough rambling! i'll list my setup.

Gear~~~~

3x3x6 grow tent
2x 300w mars og old model
4" exhaust fan +passive intake
2x 5 gal buckets
1x 10 gal res
1x 45 lpm air pump = 1x 4" air stone in each 5 gal bucket
1x 15 lpm air pump = 1x 4" air stone in 10 gal res
1/10 hp Active Aqua chiller
small 30 inch long pvc stand I built to place buckets on.

Nutrients ~~~~
AN PH perfect sensi bloom A+B <--- using bloom nutes from start to finish.
AN Big Bud
AN Overdrive
AN Rhino Skin
AN Liquid Carboload <-- Might not use this stuff
GH Calimagic
DM Zone <--- only going to use this if it seems like I need to
Great White <--- Soaked rapid rooters in base nutes + this stuff. Most likely the only time i'll use it during the grow.

Today was day 1 for the girls and I decided to go ahead and fill my system up and move the rapid rooters to the netpots. Sadly I just realized my RO filters died on me as I was setting this stuff up so while I'm waiting on a new unit I bought 7 jugs of DI water and mixed it with 5 gallons of tap water. My tap water is horrible and 330+ ppm most of the time which is why I made the switch to a cheap RO unit a while ago.

I added 52ml of bloom A+B and 32ml calimagic to 12 gallons and it gave me about 540 ppm inc my tap water. Sounded good to me so I went with it. PH? Dunno didn't check it ;D.

I'm hoping I don't have the water level in the buckets too high. the RR's don't seem to be wicking up water so I think I'm good. I had a horrible experience starting the photo plant in my first dwc grow lol. Ended up having to cut the plant out of the rock wool because it was water logged. I have a bunch of rock wool cubes from that adventure still sitting here because I refuse to touch them again after that experience haha.


I'm really excited about this grow. Water temps where the only thing stopping my last dwc grow and I'm hoping now that I've spent almost 300$ on a chiller I can finally be successful in at least one of these grow methods lol. This chiller really is amazing too, I totally forgot to insulate my res but the chiller doesn't seem to mind and it turns itself off when it hits desired temp.

I want to have sex with it.



Totally promised my girl that this would be my best grow yet and we would FINALLY never have to buy bud again. I've said this a few times to her already sadly lol. I dunno why she still has faith in me but I hope this grow is the grow!! PH perfect nutes and a chiller! I dunno how I can possibly mess this up but I'm sure I'll find a way lol. You guys can kick back, pull up chairs and enjoy the ride. I'll try to actually keep this journal updated. Maybe actually having real notes will help me ;D

Checked my water level and I'm pretty sure it's bang on. Everything seems to be setup great. Only problem I can see is this chiller is putting out heat and making my tent hotter. 84 degrees seems kind of bad but hopefully it's not that bad. I guess it's good I got the rhino skin for this grow. Hopefully my mars to cob conversion will reduce temps as well. To bad I can't do that until after this grow, my girl won't let me spend anymore money lol.

Looks like a great setup, to avoid root rot make sure you have enough Air going to your rootzone. In my experience you cannot have too much air. I am subbed up for this one

I bought the 45 lpm air pump to put 1 stone in each bucket and 1 stone in the res but after setting it up like that I was a bit disappointed with the outcome. I decided to split the 45 lpm pump just between the 2 buckets and I added a seperate 15 lpm pump just for the res. I feel like I have a shit ton of air being pumped into the system now along with res temps of 67-68. Hopefully root rot is a thing of the past. ;D

I actually read your whole grow journal and your dry weight is my dream lol. I've researched and read so many dwc journals over the past few weeks. It really seems like people on afn are growing straight monster autos in dwc. I rarely see bad yields and hydro is so exciting. The control you have over everything is just amazing.





lol after spending some time in my tent I've come to the realization that the chiller is not whats causing my temp increase. I noticed all my seedlings lately have been stretching pretty bad so after some research I learned I should be cleaning the glass on the inside and outside of my light. It was very cloudy and dirty and basically dimming my light output. Well I cleaned both of them a few days ago and the difference is crazy.

I was bending under my lights and I felt that heat on my back and I'm like WOW i don't remember this shit frying my ass like this before lol. Made me put 2 and 2 together and realized the new heat was coming from my now clean light that is performing like it should be after being cleaned for the first time in 1 and 2 years. Guess it doesn't help I also broke one of my air flow fans. Excuse to finally get a rotating one now though. ;D

Glad you liked my results and you are correct DWC is the only way to go for me any way. And Yeah I would imagine that your lights now being clean will increase your temps. You should def get the airflow fan situation taken care of, moving that air around the room is pretty vital to maintaining temps. It would sometimes make a 5 or 6 degree difference in temps when I had the rotating fan going vs not. I also almost cut my damn hand off with that stupid thing lol.

Also if you thought that was a good grow(which it totally was) you should look up MR. Ganjamoto here who grew what I believe to be the biggest Auto ever grown at 1000gs dry, I am trying to go for double that with my new greenhouse/LED setup. I can't wait to get started on my new project!!

Update tyme guiz! ;D




Sooooo where to start lol. Ran into a problem with my water level in the buckets, it was too low. I realized I made a rookie rdwc mistake and didn't have my buckets + res at the same level. I had the buckets sitting on the stand because I originally thought I needed them to be up higher. I had made some changes to my setup that negated the need for the stand in the first place and I actually never really thought about it lol. After moving the buckets off the stand the water level evened out between the res/buckets and everything was good.

I also had a little spill in my tent when I messed around with my ball valve to try and even out the water levels before I realized removing the stand was the only thing needed to do. I closed the valve just a little bit and went away for 30 minutes, came back and water was coming out of the top of the buckets haha. Thankfully I caught it pretty fast and the overflow wasn't bad at all. All my water level problems are behind me now and in the process I gained about 10 more inches of height since I no longer need the stand.

The roots on the green crack have hit the res but not the sour hound. It's actually kind of freaking me out but I guess it's no big deal as the sour hound actually looks more impressive than the green crack so far. This grow is already going 100% better than my first DWC grow so I'm confident i'm on the right track. I just wish the next 3 weeks would go by a bit faster since babies aren't much to look at ;D

I'm beyond amazed to see just how fresh my res still is at day 8. It smells great! sadly I think some clay came off the rocks and is sitting in the bottom of my buckets. No biggie though as I bought some new 3/4" vinyl tubing to use on my drain as I HATE the tubing I'm currently using and I don't even care that I wasted 16$ on it I just can't wait to get rid of it and use some tubing that I can actually get on to damn fittings correctly. I wasn't even going to drain the system at all this whole grow until I decided to replace the tubing so cleaning the clay crap at the bottom of the buckets shouldn't add too much work to that. I'm pretty sure that stuff isn't even recirculating in my system, it's just sitting at the bottom of the buckets. Actually that really sucks considering how hard I washed those damn things. I washed em and soaked em for 24 hrs in ph water. Damn things should be clean!

Oh man the quest is never ending! I want to make cookies again so bad but I haven't even been CLOSE to the yield I need to be able to support our smoking and do a little cooking at the same time. It's been many grows since I've been able to make canna butter. My struggle will be over after this grow!!

Update!

Checked roots today and the GC's root has gotten cut off some how. I'm thinking it was from the air bubbles knocking it against the pot or something. Plant looks ok but it's depressing to finally have a root hit the water only to see it get cut off and floating in the bucket. I'm assuming this must happen a lot in dwc though so hopefully it's no big deal.

@Anasazi don't fret too much, those little roots grow pretty quickly. I see that you are using mychrozial fungi it is GREAT stuff for healthy roots especially at the beginning keep putting some in the water along with the roots. Another good trick I learned with the great white is if you put it in something with water in it and stir the hell out of it then put it into your buckets it helps the fungi attach to the roots and do its thing Also your setup is NICE my friend I think you are going to grow some monsters inn that there tent!
