Old Dawg, New Trixx

I thought I’d give this blog (journal?) a try, so please bear with me as I try and navigate this system. Hopefully I’m on the right path to starting a Grow Journal.

Ok so a little about me . I medically retired in 2016 after a severe spinal injury, whether that’s a permanent ”retirement” or not remains to be seen. When Virginia allowed home grows I saw it as a perfect opportunity to take care of several issues at the same time; Pain Management, Sleep Issues and something to keep me busy. Win-Win, hopefully. The only Caveat is I am a Veteran who strictly uses the VA for medical care, so still trying to navigate the drug testing issues with them. Ok enough about my old broke down self. On to the grow !!

I started this “project” with the ASSumption that I could throw some seeds in a pot, shine a light on them and feed them Miracle Grow And I’d have it made ….. I couldn’t have been more wrong ! I had no clue it was this involved and just started throwing a Hodge-Podge of Equipment together as I read more on the subject. I should have come here FIRST but we all live and learn and whether I’m successful or not I’m sure I’ll be adjusting on the fly but having a real fun time learning and growing at the moment. I try to be very detailed when I’m passionate about something so I hope this doesn’t bore ya and I’m doing this right ? Before my untimely demise I was a Master Auto/Diesel Technician for 29.5 years. Most of which was spent with General Motors, worked for a NASCAR team owners dealership for awhile as the Engine and chassis specialist so I’m very meticulous and love learning new things every day! Will add more pictures when I am sure I’m doing this journal right

The Setup
Seeds - 3 Fem Auto Hindu Kush and 3 Fem Auto Critical Purple from Growers Choice.
Grow Tent- 3X3X6 Hydro Plus
Grow Media- Mother Earth Coco Plus Perlite 70/30. Sta-Green flower and vegetable garden soil (Leftover from an earlier project).
Grow Bags- Opulent Systems 5 Gallon X 5
Grow Light- Viparspectra VA1000 LED w/Dimmers Veg and Bloom
Ventilation- Vivosun 4” 190 CFM Inline fan w/speed control and carbon filter, 2- stationary 9” 3spd
Food- Alaskan Fish Fertilizer(5-1-1), UnSulphered Molasses, Organic Worm Castings, Great White Mycorrhizae,
Other “Stuff”- EZ Grow Starter Plugs (for eventual cloning attempts), Vivosun 10x21 seedling heat mat, 15x9 seedling tray w/dome, Vivosun
PH and TDS meters, General Hydro PH control kit, manual timer, trellis netting, 2- Digital Hygrometer and thermometer, Handheld calendar/grow journal, Various measuring tools, syringes, scales, scissors, watering can.
On Order- Air pump/diffuser for making tea, filter bags for teas, Cal Mag. Aloe Vera plants.

9/22- Day 1 Soaked 1 seed of each in water around 20 hours
9/23- Transferred to paper towel in Ziploc and put in dark tent 73.6f 63%RH
9/24- Checked Paper Towel, moisture still good. CP has small tail, HK cracked but no tail 74.5f, 61%RH
9/25- Moisture still good, both seeds have tails CP 1/2”, HK 1/4”. Decided to leave them one more day. 73f, 63%RH
9/26- Made the decision to mix 2 parts coco with 1 part potting soil for both bags (needed to get rid of the extra dirt) . While mixing in a large rubbermaid container in the garage, decided to moisten the mixture to the desired amount with Molasses based on reading an article on natural growing methods and soil prep before the grow. Used 1tsp for one gallon water , also added 1tsp of fish emulsion based on another article . Filled 2 grow bags with the media mixture, used a sharpie end and created a hole 3/4” deep. at this time I didn’t have the Great white. Placed the seeds in the holes and covered lightly. Using a spray bottle I lightly misted the tops of the soil with the above mixture. Placed identifier tags in each. Set my lights to 18” and set the Veg switch to 50%, bloom switch off. 73f, 63%RH. lights on 24/7 Hygrometer probe @ plant level.
9/27- CP popped the dirt and she’s a beauty ! , HK still hiding . Zip tied one fan to the top-left corner of the tent pointing toward the lower opposite corner (To diffuse the air flow). Checked the dirt with 3 knuckles deep and checked the weight of the pot. Lightly sprayed 2” away and around CP . Same for HK but not directly on the seed area. Plan was to make the roots hunt out the moisture 2” from base of plant ‍♂ 77.2f/62%RH placed a cut off water bottle (dome) over HK after lightly spraying the inside of the bottle.
9/28- HK is awake and ready for some love. Seed halves stuck to leaf, used tweezers to spread seed apart and it fell off. (Saw this on a germination video) Leaves look great. Really small compared to CP ! 79.4f/61%RH. Heat concerns me, opened tent during the day. Set house HVAC to Auto mode @ 72 will monitor. Added 2nd Hygrometer/Therm to HK pot, directly on the dirt (no probe with this one). Watered out 2” both plants with plain water
9/29- Both plants look great. Checking morning and night for temp and humidity all good so far. Light mist soil before bed, none on leaves ever. 77.4f/57%RH. Ordered Vivosun 4” exhaust system W/ carbon filter. Bought 2 more 9” stationary fans just in case.
9/30- No water today. All looks good. Still opening during day and closing at bedtime. 77.7f/56%RH. plants growing well. Nice and green. 2nd
set of leaves coming in
10/1- Water morning check only. Started using large plastic syringe to give exact amount of water to each for a more precise measurement. 4tsp each . Very scared of over-watering !! Easy does it ! 77.7f/55%RH. Many offering help with first grow, pleasantly-surprised at the willingness to share knowledge from other growers! Have had a few pushing product , have to watch out for wolf in sheep’s clothing . Wondering if it’s possible to have a successful grow using only “Natural“ on-hand products ? Started research on this. Had a long conversation with an experienced grower from groups about natural grows and advised dozens of references on KNF methods. Will most likely give some of these a try soon. Some great examples given on large-healthy yields.
10/2- Set up exhaust system after ball game. External fan motor with Carbon Filter inside (evacuating tent). Added 1 9” fan to lower vent hole. Need to think about filter for intake ? Car air filter element, cut in circle ? House AC paper only filter ? Watch for glass or other bad stuff in filters !!!!! Set floor fan to medium, exhaust fan to 1/2 throttle. All seems good Even zipped up! Need references on Positive or Negative airflow in tent ??? 76.6f/50%RH. Mixed a new gallon of water, not sure on shelf life ? No sense taking chances. Started compost bin on back porch. Gathered mason jars and gallon pickle jars for possible KNF Methods. 4tsp each 9:26pm . Measured light distance from leaves. Moved to 22”@ 70% Veg switch. Will monitor heat
10/3- 9am check. Plants look amazing ! CP 2 1/4”, HK 1 1/2”. 4 serrated leaves on each plus the two original round ones. Nice green color. 77.7f/56%RH. Turn pots 180, because light is angled due to carbon filter hang. May need to reconfigure but light is hitting good on both.
If it ain’t broke don’t fix it. Lower fan seems to be gently moving stems for strength. All appears good. 4tsp each. Game Day, Brady Bunch return !!!! 11:32pm 77.5f/51%RH. Ordered calmag, tea bags and air pump for teas and possible future need(cal mag). All good. Very excited ! Forgot to mention, Postive pressure in tent when closed. Opened lower left screened viewing square. Leave zipper open at top 6”. Seems manageable now. Still need further info on this. Have seen references to possible bug deterrent, POS,NEG? New friend mentioned shutting off lights 1-5am. Need to research this more !!!!

As a side note Brady pulled it off. Wasn’t pretty but a W is a W

I am so confused by this whole blogging journal aspect, I probably should have just stuck with a normal post because this is complicated and not even sure it’s working the way it’s supposed too lol
Edited to add I truly have no ide why this shows up a second time on page 2 ? There was one step on the process that asked me to fill in the blog description and the blog entry was another. I don’t have any clue why it did this. Any new grows will be done in the regular threads :nono:

Considering myself a sagacious one, I can't seem to get a grip on blog entries, is that what you're calling a journal? Cannot discern where to look next!

A single thread seems so much easier, may avail a single singing, solicitous thread myself soon, got a little sumpin' in da' worx. Best!

they won't roll themselves, we'll help em' along a bit...

One week later and things have really “hit the fan” in the grow tent y’all !
Seems like all hells broke loose and I’m getting discouraged fast.
Problem 1 Started out last week noticing these little bugs (gnats) flying all over the place. If I ran my hands through the clay pebbles I’d have hundreds flying around. So I ordered some nematodes and yellow sticky paper traps. The sticky paper seems to be working good, I haven’t sat down and studied the directions on the nematodes yet though.
Problem 2- I assumed the gnats were coming from maybe too much water, so I was letting them go exactly 72 hours between watering and I kept noticing my RH dropping daily. Got down into the 30’s (32 lowest) so I quit venting my filter outside and went back to venting into the room. We have had a good-strong cold snap and the heat pump has been running pretty steady. I also ordered a cool mist humidifier for the tent, installed it this morning and currently it’s 49%RH/75.4f in the tent.
Problem 3-While I was trying to dry out my CP and HK plants to help with the gnats problem I was also drying out my little babies I was playing around with !!
I’m not sure what I did to the little ones but they aren’t looking too healthy anymore
I watered the bigger girls last night 1.5L each.

just sprayed the soil around the babies and the leaves with water had a clear solo cup over them for a dome.
This morning they are looking a little sick
Here’s one of them looking a whole lot yellow lol.

Anyways we are still in business with the HK and CP
, got rid of some fan leaves, topped them both some and started training them to the one side. Hopefully they will take off soon
I picked up a second grow light off a friend, same brand as the one I have now but no dimmer switches just 2 switches off/on for Veg and bloom, I’ll be playing around with maximum light coverage and most likely moving some stuff around in the tent too get better organized and prioritize light intensity to the two big plants.
I’m considering removing the clay pellets and putting a thick layer of sand on them just haven’t decided yet
Thanks for hanging with me on this journey !!

Do you know about diatomaceous earth? If not, look into it pronto.

If it were me I'd leave the Clay Pebs unless it's making it hard to tell if they need water because moist soil is BAD for fungus gnats, meaning they like wet soil! But with our without the pebs I'd spray that whole layer with neem oil and a few drops of essential oil (citronella, lemon or peppermint oil essential oil) mixed with h20. You will have to stay on it with the neem since it's a cyclic remedy meaning it takes several days/sprayings but the essential oils will act quickly as a repellant. You are using LED so spray only the clay pebs and not the plant, or if you do spray any on the leaves do it after lights out and do it lightly because oil based pesticides do not play well with LED lights.
I would definitely get some food grade diatomaceous earth on that clay peb layer as well, or on the soil if you remove it and after the spray, if you do spray, sprinkle a dusting of DE over that whole clay layer (or soil if you remove them).

As for the small yellow little fellow, I don't know enough about what you're doing from day to day to say much but if that soil is moist let it dry up to an inch down and after a day or 2, hit them with a ph'd tonic of 2-3 oz h20 with 3-4 drops h202, 1 tsp of coconut water, a tiny pinch of kelp or a few drops of seaweed, one or all of these could make a big difference. I'd go a step further and blend all this together in a blender with a small piece of aloe vera, water that in and keep an eye on them.
I can only say what I would do. BEST!

I’ve got DE and some liquid Kelp on the way . I am starting to think I need to find an apprenticeship program somewhere and just learn as much as I can from on the job training .

When it comes to pests the more weapons you have in your arsenal the better chance you have of ridding yourself and your friends of them.

I broke out the Apple cider traps the first day, we have used them for years on fruit fly’s.
I was using a shallow saucer but the heat isn’t he tent kept drying it out really fast. I got a bunch that way though.

Not much to report really. The gnats appear to be dwindling down fast. Have seen a few but nothing like they were.
Made some changes in the Grow tent and room today to get more organized.
Added the second grow light and using it right above the two bigger plants, since there’s no dimmer on it.

Moved the exhaust to the right side of the tent to make it easier to get to the window if needed.

Worms are still thriving, I’ll give them until January in the 1 bin setup and then I’ll add a migration bin and start moving them up. Glad to report all the seedlings appear to be bouncing back with a vengeance for now. New growth popping up every day.
One of my buddies said that the Critical Purple is now in Pre-Flower, had white hairs popping up everywhere. The Hindu Kush has some showing also.

Week 7 !!! Both plants appear to be doing good. 1liter water each. Having a hard time finding any gnats now so I believe that issue has been “nipped in the bud”.
Light @ 22” showing 38,000 lux each. 77.1f 47% RH.

Both plants seem to have roughly the same height now and also appears the HK has caught up with the growth of the CP.

Week #8 tomorrow. Been fighting temperature and humidity issues the whole week. Weather is going crazy and it’s hard to predict what’s gonna happen from one day to the next. Welcome to Virginia :baked:
I’m currently looking at getting a temp and humidity control panel, the AC infinity series appears to work only with their products ? I’m currently looking at the Inkbird options hopefully I can find something that works without going broke.

Made my first SST with Barley seeds last week was fairly straightforward.

Added a net on the 17th but realized I probably just need to make my own so will start that process tomorrow sometime. I’d really like to grow them out flat.

Ended up getting these brown spots on the leaves of the CP don’t think this is wind burn. Possibly could have dripped water on the leaves while filling the humidifier ? Oh well I’m keeping an eye on both and have considered just cutting those off ? Not sure if that’s a good idea or not

F213596E-2D85-4AE7-8871-B2176D5FE517.jpeg

And these spots on the HK. After moving the stuff around in the tent, I had a fan blowing directly in on this plant and the leaves all started curling up and browning only where the fan was hitting it. Which makes me assume it was wind burn. I relocated the fan.

but could be more controlled with a smaller net.
5DEAB72D-077B-4CEB-AF39-E56BD704985D.jpeg

It seems the squares are too big and I need more control to spread them out.
I did see one of them Japanese beetles in the tent and he is no longer a resident.
As you can see there’s been a lot going on good and bad LOL. Still having fun though and that’s all I can hope for at the moment.
Thanks for following along.

What nutes are you using? Cal mag as well?
Congrats on the gnat decimation! You can defol autos a couple of times, some varieties will take better to it, especially the xxl and xl varieties. I would do so only selectively with those plants, maybe a few leaves, not because they look too bad, but to expose other bud sites. It's better to do any defol as they begin flower and/or about 4-5 weeks in and not in the growth spurt (stretch). They don't look like they are going to finish really big so be cautious a about slowing them down at this point with pruning.
Hoping for a big growth jump over the next couple of weeks and if you want to 'open up the plant' a bit, a few selective leaf removals should not hurt. YMMV.
BEST!

I tried my hand at building my own hanging PVC net system and it was an epic fail. I’ll back up and punt with that idea and may just TIG weld me a lightweight aluminum frame. This net system is 6” squares and just doesn’t work very well.

I think you’re right they will probably not get very big. This growth above the net this morning has me hopeful though

Also have banana tea, SST, LAB and Worm Castings. So far that’s all I have and don’t really have a solid plan on what to use and when lol.
I have tried to use calmag once a week and just did the big casting/SST tea last week.
I need to get a plan of action for the stage these two are in now and stick with it.
I turned my exhaust fan and both tent fans down last night and it appears that the temp and humidity issues are a little better. Still trying to choose a controller system for temp and RH.

I'd finish out with the Fox Farm trio, I think you'd be using the Tiger Bloom and Big Bloom? Till finish, I'd do an alternate approach and see how they like it.
I'd alternate between the FF and EWC tea with and EWC WITHOUT 1/2 t unsulfured molasses (bubbled for 12 hours). I'd say you're watering every 2 -4 days (depending on conditions) so for example water this time with the FF and next watering with the EWC/moll tea. #3 watering with the FF, # 4 watering with EWC tea only, #5 FF only, #6 EWC/Moll and just do that for 2-3 weeks and observe progress. You could do a lot worse than that! Are you measuring PPM? Adults plants can handle quite a high PPM concentration but no sense giving them more than they can handle (not saying you are), so look into it!

I'm doing a radical changeover from what I normally do just because I've had some issues to deal with in soil from time to time and I've grown weary of dealing with bugs and other complications in soil. So I am gearing up for a very different approach. Will share more if your inclined to know more. If so I'll pm some info.
I've not heard of Gold Leaf, will look into it. Best!

Been a very busy week with a houseful of grand babies and ball players lol. I’ve not gotten much done at all. Sneaking into the locked grow room, real fast while everyone is in bed is the best I can do till Monday :stir:
Anyways I got major issues and gonna have to regroup as soon as the house empties out.
Here’s several photos of the issues that are popping up on the CP, The HK appears to be fairly healthy and green still. Im assuming it’s either too much water or major PH issue. My water is 7.8 and unless it rains soon I’m stuck with tap for now. I have a buddy that makes his own RO water and I can get some as soon as the family has cleared out.

I was able to take 30 minutes to myself and recalibrate the PH pens. I’m getting consistent readings with the apera in 7.0 and 4.0 solutions every time now. The 10.01 all I can get is 9.98 every time. Have no idea if it’s temperature of the fluid or if P3 is even needed for this process. I either need to get some 6.86 fluid for the vivosun or go with what I have now, which is 6.86 in 7.0 fluid or 4.0 in 4.0 fluid every time ?
AF246235-E80A-4C94-BD44-9CC0BF0E7E91.jpeg

My plan is to hold off on watering until Sunday (will be 36 hours) to see if they droop any, was hoping this would show whether I’m overwatering or under watering, then water them heavy runoff and take runoff measurements. I have never really had enough major runoff to measure.
I’ll get a little out of the sides of the bags if I water too fast. If I water slow I get a very little bit out the bottom in the catch pan. Maybe a tablespoon or two at most.
I just don’t know enough about all this to know which way is best. Seems the more I try and learn the more confused I am lol. I’m blonde and southern so I’m easily confused. I am still having fun though lol and also have ideas on things to change for the next grow attempt either way.
Stay safe out there and happy holidays !!
Thanks for hanging out with me !!

Ok so been a few days since I updated and been busy with the Veterans Administration and also had a few things in the works I was trying out on the grow side of things.
After the above post I talked to a friend about the stunted growth of the HK and he recommended transplanting the it into new-soil, since that was the only grow bag that had a crazy mixture of old soil and new. Having nothing too lose at this point I figured what the heck ?
I’m trying to learn as much as possible so it’ll give me a different experience and I just went for it.
Removed the HK, was very surprised at how small the roots actually were.

I have since started 2 other auto seeds. One is G14 I traded for from a friend and the other is a Russian Lights I acquired from a new local grow shop that I decided to stop in on the way through town the other day. I’m attempting to germinate the G14 exactly like I did the 2 from Growers Choice but the Russian Lights (Demonic Genetics) is going directly in the soil, in a solo cup (another experiment).

There’s nothing in the front pot yet Since this above photo around lunchtime Sunday I’ve started watering with a handheld garden sprayer. 1L each morning and night, depending on if I am going to be home in the evening I might give both a heavier dose in the morning.
The G14, when it germinates will be grown exclusively with Gold Leaf liquid food. This is something a friend uses and I want to experiment a little. The first attempt at germination turned out kinda strange. 24hrs in the paper towel there was a tail but barely out of the shell

looks like it was on the right track ? Next day the tail got smaller ….

Talked to my buddy and he said give it another day and if it doesn’t grow a tail start the other seed and I’ll bring you another to replace that one.
I checked it last night and it was completely closed again. No sign of a tail or anything . I was thinking “this is one of those seeds that woke up and decided it wasn’t gonna go to work and went back to bed” lol.
So I started another G14 and we will see how that goes. Anyone ever had that happen ??

Had a late night ball game last night and basically checked the temp and RH, closed the tent and went to bed !!
The Russian Lights from the grow shop popped the soil sometime last night and I’m looking forward to seeing how these strains grow and experimenting with each in different ways. Remember this is my therapy and I’m happy as a pig in the mud just to keep busy !!

yesterday’s photo op. I did add some clay pellets to the CP pot. I like the look and have a bunch I needed to start using lol. I’ll do the same with the others as they grow a little bigger.
Todays photo update

I’m really excited for this plant. I see something new every time I check it.
HK has some nice green/new growth coming in since the transplant. Optimistic on this one

Thanks for hangin out with me on this life-changing journey.
The worm farm is doing amazing for those that were curious. Been eating well and growing like “worms”
I’m not sure if this is allowed but I’d like to mention a company I knew nothing about until last week, Kineos Genetics who sent me a free sample of their Rewire strain which they are giving away 100% FREE to disabled veterans.

I learned of them and their Veteran Friendly program, through a FB group post and thought I’d give them a shout, 3 days later I had a 7-pack of their Rewire strain on my doorstep.
Any company that goes out of their way to help my brother and sister veterans, has my attention. These are photos so this will be another experiment for a later date- Stay Tuned :thanks:
I’m already thinking about a grow room, another grow tent and adding more & different light setups
Being a veteran my self I appreciate that they do that.

@Pigskin Fanboy Just curious I was scrolling through and reading here and there. If your running organic why the PH pens? Is that due to the additives messing with soil PH? I grow organic now in the past I was a coco grower and my PH meter has cobwebs on it.

I thought you always PH the water regardless of what method you are using to grow ? I know there’s different readings for different grow mediums so I dunno  I’m learning as I go lol.

LOL, those are the worst!

I would just get an accurate eight soil ph meter so you can look at your soil PH if it is in the proper range and you do not dump a ton of organic nutes the microbes will break down your nutrients for uptake and PH is not that big of a concern. One of the pluses of running organic soil.

Again I never ph anything but I only add a few items to soil. Castings, LAB, and Buildabloom in flower once a week. Sometimes compost tea but I have been lazy the last few months and haven't added any. Check out the organic growers chat room. I think there will be more detailed information with numbers and science and stuff. :pass:
