Why the helmet head?

Hello everyone! My first ever seeds are starting to sprout, I dropped 6 and 3 are up. 2 of them have come up with the shell and while they seem to be fine, for the future I’m curious is it due to not dropping it deep enough? Id say the hole was a little less than a knuckle deep. Ive been reading about all the different grow styles and I’m excited to form my own with so much experience here to fall back on. Peace

I have used a tooth pic to gently help the helmet off my seedlings. Just be gentle!

It’s been my (limited) experience that seeds placed deeper come up without the helmet. I use rooters that I slice top to bottom. I then place the germinated seed with its tail pointed down. I target about 2cm below the top. That’s worked for the last several grows.

Prying the helmet off can actually cause more damage if you're not careful... If you put a drop of water on top of the seedling and it's helmet the extra moisture will soften the shell and it will fall off by itself. No manual interaction necessary
