when to harvest seeds?

curious about when to take a plant down if you want viable seeds. do i need to wait for the plant to die?

Caylxes split open, dark brown seeds showing, if the internodal caylxes were pollenated, they will usually ripen first. Other than that, look back 6 weeks, and try and get an idea of the when... if there was a male, you would know the last date he was around, if it was a herm, I wouldn't be looking for viable seeds. That gene needs to be removed from the gene pool.

They don't change really from what you buy ( they look the same as when you get them), so that's what your lookin for.

In nature, do the seeds eventually just fall out of buds? And thus might it be good to wait to see some mature seeds start dropping?

They would, that's where I look to the caylxes at the internodal joint. If they're pollenated, and ripe, a gentle rub will get them to pop out. I've taken plants too far, well past ripe... that can be an unpleasant smoking experience. Pollenate early and that won't be an issue.

You smoke plants you grow for seed? I'm harvesting seeds from plants I pollinated and just tossing everything other than the seeds.

Little Brother, you want the seeds to have the coloring and mottled appearance that the mature seeds you buy will have. The caylxes start to split before the seeds are fully mature. Once the seeds are fully mature the caylxes will turn brown and the seeds will start falling out. The last plant I harvested last week I hung for a few days and seeds began falling out then I cut off buds and kind of rubbed them and the mature seeds fall out easier. From a small autoflower plant that I pollinated early I got around 500 mature seeds.

I cut down some ditch weed once and dragged it to a trash compactor just a few yards away and so many seeds fell out onto the ground that the next Spring we had to pull hundreds of plants out from where the seeds fell.

I have five more pollinated plants I have to cut in the next couple days to harvest seeds from and I already have what looks like thousands from two small plants. I pollinated probably seven plants repeatedly over a week and not all the seeds mature at the same time. I was cutting off individual buds and taking seeds to see if they were ready. I hadn't looked at my outdoor grow for several days and looked tonight and one of my plants has basically died off and needs to have the seeds harvested tomorrow. Looks like I pollinated 43 days ago. I tossed some seeds in a pot a week or so ago that weren't mature and they are growing.

You will want to let the seeds dry out before putting them in a container as the moisture content will be high enough to cause mold if you don't.

I used to pheasant hunt in huge stands of feral hemp out in South Dakota and as we walked through the fields of hemp the seeds would fall like rain around us. The pheasants would congregate in the fields of hemp because of the seeds that would just fall to the ground.

No the over ripe plant was not seeded, just ran too long. Plants for seed I remove seeds and dry ice shake it and then press the keif into rosin. Back in the 80s January till October the weed round here was always full of seeds, so I guess if that's what I had to smoke I would.
I get several grams of great rosin from a seed run plant.

PS: I would not consume a plant that was reversed with CS and then selfed. Edibles only for a selfed plant. CS is safe for oral consumption, no info on smoked or vaped.
