New Grower When to harvest autos? Your leaves will tell you.

One of the most frequently asked questions is how do I know when my autos are ready to pick? The convention wisdom from growing photo period plants was to watch for color change in the trichomes, or crystals. For an uplifting high, harvest when the trichomes are all cloudy, for more of a stone, wait till a percentage have turned amber. Sound advice, for photos. But autos are a little different. While some strains have shown amber trics, many do not.

So how do I know when they are ready? I watch the the fan leaves. Over the past several years of growing autos I started taking samples at various stages of growth to evaluate the high. I tend to prefer my smoke with a little stone so began to leave them longer than the 8-9 weeks that are advertised. I find that around 11-12 weeks the plants are ripe for me. I also began to see a correlation between the color of the fan leaves, the color of the trics and the high/stone quality of the smoke at the various sample intervals. It seemed that the greener the fan leaves, the more clear trics the buds had. As the fan leaves started to yellow and die off, the trics became less clear and more milky. By the time that all the fan leaves had died off and the bud leaves were starting to yellow, I got the quality of smoke I wanted. At that time most of the trics were now milky with no, or only a few, clear ones. Here are some examples:

I've found this to be a very reliable method. It takes about 3 weeks for the fan leaves to die off. During that time the buds will continue to fatten up as the plant uses the energy stored in the fan leaves. So when I see my leaves start to yellow, I wait a week, then begin cleansing them. Two weeks later they will be well cleansed and read to harvest.

Of course there will be other factors such as genetics, lighting, nutrients, pot size, etc. that will effect how long a plant takes. But as a general guide for when to pick, just watch your leaves.

NOTE: If you have questions regarding your personal grow, please post them in the appropriate forum and not in this thread.

That's something we've been doing a little experimenting on. Scott817 has been maintained a higher N level right up until flush with some positive results. I'm intending to do the same with my current grow and see what the results are.

Thanks for your sharing your experience with this.. This is my first indoor project using auto varieties - would you normally recommend cutting the nitrogen completely as the plant advances to maturity?

I hear you, but nothing says you can't take one of those LRs a little early to keep yourself in smoke while the rest finish up. Won't be fully mature but beats smoking crappy bag weed.

funny how 2 weeks is no time at all except when your smokeless --i really hate to go spend 100.00 on some bagweed when i got 5 lowryders and a deiselryder and a cronic ryder swelling up at an undisclosed location a few weeks out-----but heck what ya gonna do!--will have to try that muddy.it says 8 weeks but i was shooting for 9 weeks--may have to wait till 10 weeks total grow---wow 2 or 3 weeks seem like forever!!!like tom petty sang----waiting is the hardest part!!!

Thanks to all for the kind words. But I did have an ulterior motive. Hoping that by posting this info I won't have to answer the same question over and over. :D

Have a couple others in mind and now that work season is over, I should have some time to work on them.

Thanks. We're also still a little unclear with regard to how this may effect productivity too. I have certainly observed a quicker maturity outdoors as N levels in the top soil declined, but would like to find out if this has an impact on the final yield. I don't mean to go off topic here but i have another question for you; Do you use humic extracts in your potting mix or as additive? If you do, from your experience... how do the auto genotypes respond to humus when used as an additive to the growing media such as mulching?

Thanks for your input.
Interesting topic :D

I add micronized humic acid to my mix and also use some in liquid form in my feedings from time to time. I also add a couple drops to the water when I soak my seeds. I've only seen positive results using it. It also helps to feed the mycorrhizal fungi in the soil.

As you all know I am in constant rotation. I plant a lot of seeds and I am harvesting constantly. That means that I am feeding mature plants at the same time as I am feeding babies and ver groth. I have mature plants in flower that are getting a lot of Nitrogen. I used to back the nitrogen off when they went into flower and head to a flowering mix. Imagine my surprise when my flowering plants made just as much bud with the nitrogen still on em. I don't flush I just harvest and I don't see any difference. Granted I don't turn out big weight per plant like Jackal but I do crank out a lot of weight through sheer numbers. I am trying to keep all my plants through my own breeding to single colon types and I am a ruthless branch clipper. This year I will be totally converting my tank to femmed seeds only. Males are a true pain in the ass soaking up my light and space. I will continue to stick with different breeds in my tanks to go along with my philosophy of a bigger gene pool and more variety to my grow.

Thanks muddy. I am a noob and have been watching the trich on my blue himalaya. Most of the fan leaves have yellowed and fell off with 90% milky trichs. She might just be ready sooner than I was thinking. +rep

Muddy :) Great thread!

Do you add alot of extra bud weight by letting them go another week or two or does it only get the buzz diffrent for autos?

They put some more weight on but not a whole lot. By then you're flushing them and they are living off the fan leaves.

great info muddy.. thanx for sharing.. i have 2 russian rockets and a easyryder at day 68. im goin to let one rr go for a lil longer to see the difference. the others r coming down in a few days.. thanx again man...

Great thread. Sometimes, its the basic questions that people dont know the answer to. Especially when the answer is different for autos than it is for photos.
When you get time, a FAQ or auto101 thread would be a great one for you to start. Your answers are clear and easily followed. Thanks! +rep 4U
