Do you have a green thumb?
If your answer is yes, you can stop reading right here ....
For others, like myself, the proper watering on soil can be a big issue, especially using a big (final) pot from the start on. Growers without a vast experience or without the green thumb often feel a bit alone when trying to get detailed, more tangible information about how often and how much you water a young plant. Obviously there are a lot of different ways to deal with it ... so my objective was just to create a way which would be reproducible and easy to follow. I proofed it through several grows and it works very well: healthy, big and well yielding plants!
My setup:
- Airpots 10 and 15 l
- Biobizz light mix (keeps its volume better than Plagron!)
- No additional Perlite .. Biobizz has plenty of it
- Good water
- Master TaNg‘s easy feeding schedule ( thank you so much for sharing your knowledge @TaNg )
- Temperature: 24-28 C when lights on, 19-23 C when off
- Humidity: 35-50% during the whole grow
- Lights: LED Hans Panel 180W, 19h on / 5h off (90x90 cm growspace)
- Digital scale for measuring the weight of the pots
First steps:
After filling the pots with the soil, I put them into my tent ... so soil will get the right temperature. I do this without watering, 24 hours before the planting.
I plant the germinated seed about 1-1,5cm deep, water it gingerly with 50ml of plain water in an area of more or less 5cm around the seed. Then I cover this area with a transparent cup and leave it alone.
Day 0: Mostly 2 days after planting, the seedlings will see the light of the world. It‘s the moment you take away the cup. The cup has kept the soil moist, so there is no need of water at all. I start watering on day 1, which is the day after „the birth“.
Days 1,3,5,7 and 9: 50ml of plain water.
Days 11 and 13: 100ml each plant, starting the feeding.
Now, on day 13 and directly after adding the water, I put each pot on the digital scale and note down the weights of them, so each pot has now its „personal maximum weight“.
From now on and on every watering you add water to the pot until reaching its individual personal max. weight
Day 14 - harvest: Amount of water (weight) the pot has lost since the last watering.
Example: If the pot is 180gr lighter than after the last watering, you have to water it with 180ml. (I take the weight daily)
Don‘t water if the pot has lost less than 100gr since the last watering, simply wait another day before you look after it again! The amount of water the plant needs will increase more or less until day 30-35, after that you won‘t have to weight your pots daily. Once every 3 or 4 days for control and adjustments will be enough.
If you have any questions don‘t hesitate to ask. I will respond as good as I can. English is not my native language so please excuse all the errors in my writing.
Peace and love,
El Gringo
