How long does water need to sit in 5 gallon buckets before I should use it ?

Min. 24 hours, maybe less if you agitate/bubble it with a clean airstone and high pressure pump.

:Yeah, sounds about right, warmer water temps speed the process as well... :check: BUT, one thing to look into SaH, is that not all treatment plants use the typical Chlorine gas treatment; some may include in conjunction with this an altogether different chemical called chloramine, which isn't a gas, but something in liquid suspension, and so will not gas off like it does otherwise..it's weaker in killing power, though it probably has be removed by a carbon or RO type filter.... a quick (LOL) call to you water Co, or visit their website, will tell you what process technique they use....:tiphat:

Yes, be double sure your city doesn't use chloramine. It will not gas off. One of the cheapest ways to deal with it is aquarium drops from the pet store, chemical reaction that results in both being neutralized.
After reading what it says online from the local water dept. I guess our water is so clean they do not even filter it and only add...

:coffee break: Morning bro'!.... sounds like your water source is pretty choice! Have you tested it for hardness, just out of curiosity? Regardless, if it's as high Q as they state, it's very unlikely that they're using chloramine as a secondary treatment.... The more dangerous pathogens, like Giardia, and cryptosporidium are not well affected by the weaker chloramine.... I'm pretty sure the concern for our ladies is mostly for the micro-herd in the soil getting zorched, not so much the plants... my house plants don't get the luxury water, and they're just fine,... I still gas mine off for the above reasons, and mix it with RO to knock down the hardness and still keep some buffering capacity! :
