Hey there, sir. How high are your lights and what kind? Sometimes I gather some of the top soil that's in there and build it around the stem some for support if they seem to need it. At four inches, you may have your light up too high and it's causing them to stretch.

Cheers, I haven't put them under lights yet. I kept them away from direct sunlight. it seems everytime i germinate some seeds this happens!. When i look at photos on here and see plants smaller than 4 inches with a few leaves starting i wonder what i am doing wrong? Once they have cracked in the jiffy plugs what is the next step to keep them in good order>

PS they are pakistan ryder and jock horror

So you're growing outside?

You need more light outside or to start them inside for a couple weeks first. What are your germination methods? Once cracked and/or soaked or a tap root shows, it needs to go in it's medium, and as soon as it breaks soil it needs light, or even before then.

This is what i usually do. As soon as they crack i uncover them, leave them in the jiffy plug, i keep them in the living room but not in direct sun. I then carefully transfer the whole thing into a pot. This is only my third grow so am not sure of the best way to go forward for this grow. I am growing in biobizz soil in a corner surrounded with reflective sheeting. This time i want to save on electricity so i am thinking of getting a different light for the first few weeks. Any tips for this stage will be appreciated.
Once they are ready for lights (?) i have a 400 hps to put them under. How soon and how near do i want to put them.

As soon as they sprout above soil, they need light. You aren't getting enough in your living room. Start that 400 watt hps at around 24 inches and slowly work it down as they gain sets of leaves and age. You can also start your seedling under a light that isn't as powerful, such as T5s for the first couple weeks, but you'll be ok, get them in the light and on a steady schedule and environment.

Thank you all for the help, i am gonna investigate the 125watt cfl for my next grow, even a couple of weeks under that before puting them under the hps will save electricity.

I had an experiment on my last grow. There is a method of growing veg called "deep dig" or double dig" This involves digging 2 spades deep and then NEVER standing on the plot so that it remains loose and uncompacted. The idea is that the roots go down rather than out. I have always grown veg this way and you get lots more crops per plot cos you can grow them closer together. What i did in my grow space was to fill the container withbiobizz but i never tamped it down, i just shook the pot to level it. It is taller by 8 inches than the other two. I am now growing 6 plants so i will do the same again with three and see what happens.

No problem man. I hope it all works out for you.

One more question concerning lights and electric expenses. Putting them under the 400hps as soon as possible is probably best. BUT if i put them for 2 or 3 weeks under a 125 cfl (the bulbs cost about £18) will that extend the growing period? In other words does that mean that i will still have to leave them under the 400 hps for another 2-3 weeks, which will cost the same in the end? I am trying to cut down the electricity costs so any tips on this will be appreciated.
