Hi everyone. I am first time poster, but have been a lurker for a short while. This seems like a knowledgeable and friendly community.

I have a question about indoor growing – specifically air flow and ventilation.

I have a spare bedroom in the house which is around 10ft x 10ft and I want to set up a small grow tent (2x2) to grow one or two autos. I plan to keep the plants small as my needs are minimal.

The room has a window which can be left open a few inches to let fresh air in.

So the crux of my question is; will having the window open a little allow enough fresh air into the room to replenishing the air in the tent, and can I vent the air from the tent into the same room? (I can run ducting towards the window, but cannot have ducting going out the window nor can I go down the road of cutting holes to the loft space to vent into.)

Also will smell be an issue? I plan on using an Infinity T6 Fan (6inch) and a Rhino Pro filter.

I know this isn’t an ideal situation, but it’s the only way I might be able to grow indoors.

I'll chip in while the more experienced ones come by.

You can grow great herbs in that situation. I would put a thermohygrometer into that room ASAP and get an idea of the max/mins of temp and RH, but unless it's too humid or too dry, or too hot or too cold, don't worry. I also have very minimal needs and grow in a 2x2x4 tent in a 9x9 room. I never open the window in that room, nor do I use a filter for smells. I am fortunate to have neighbors who don't mind the delicious smells, and my home has good airflow so i just keep the room's door open... but since my city is pretty humid and cold, i prefer not to open the window and it hasn't seemed necessary yet. In other places i've grown, opening the window would be enough if outside and inside temps were close. It all really depends on your particular RH and temps.
That fan you are getting is great, and with a filter, you wont have to worry about smells as long as the tent is sealed and the exhaust fan working properly. Do make sure to get a good oscillating fan to have inside the tent for air circulation.
And you might be able to just vent into the same room as I do. But again, it depends or your RH and temp conditions, especially once you have all set up (lights, fans, etc. that add/modifiy temp and rh), so try to set up everything and start registering your RH and Temp adn then you'll know better what to do about ventilation needs.

BTW, what are you going to use for light?

@elcoloan – Thank you for your reply! Much appreciated. My light will be a Mars Hydro TS1000.

The humidity in my room is around 50% and temps of 21º - 26º in summer (the room gets very little direct sun).

With your set-up, do you get any issues with mold or odour in the room?

You will be fine with that setup brother. I have a 3x3 in a smaller room that I vent into and get passive air intake from and I have no issues. As far as smell as long as you are running a carbon filter you should be able to keep the smell in check.

Nope. We are very tidy and clean the room weekly since it's just the tent in the room and the room is not used for anything else than storing stuff. I did get mold on a bud on a recent run, but I'm sure it was mostly because of a friend who can't keep his dirty hands off of flowering plants. And other than the natural smell of a plant growing in the room, the only other smells i have are from the kelp in my nutrients (MegaCrop)... i have a reservoir filled with them in that room and they get stinky after a day or two of just sitting there. But that's a different topic.

Tag me if you get a journal started. I love following other's growing in 2x2s.

Should have no problems. I grow in a 2x2 as well. Mine is in my basement but since it's a townhouse complex I need the carbon filter to mask odors even though it's legal where I live.
Basement (heated) is roughly 30x30 and the 3x2 window provides fresh air. I vent into the basement. Temps range from 20-25c year round and humidity is 30-50%. If I need more humidity for germination/veg I just use wet towels in the tent. Works like a charm. ✌

That's good to know. Thank you for your help!

I have never grown indoors, so I'm hoping a good carbon filter will get rid of smell.

@Ken Green this is Houston. You are a go for growing.
It's looking that way! I need to get a few more bits, then I'm ready for lift off! Got some seeds, so can't wait!

Hi @Ken Green :welcome:Welcome to AFN:welcome:The room your tent is in is called the "lung room". Under ideal circumstances you want to keep the lung room ~ 68°F with RH ~ 40% when the plants are 3 or more weeks old. This will give you good numbers in the tent with proper ventilation ~78°F day and ~ 68°F night with RH 40% to 60%. You will need to play around with venting, cooling, heating, humidifying and dehumidifying the lung room. It will change with the seasons. There is no one size fits all. Just be careful with humidity as a closed lung room will soon be too wet. It is a learning adventure. Have fun!

:goodluck:

Also, for the carbon filter to be effective all tent air should pass through it on it's journey to the lung room, at a low velocity so the carbon has time to capture oder particles...
IE, keep the tent closed and get a fan controller ...
Wife complains when I "forget" to zip the tent.
