Finally ready to go on this. I've just finished mixing up and sprayed a lower branch on my 30 day old double grape. I've got some orange diesel and purple lemonade growing inside the tent at the same time that I won't mind if a little pollen heads their way. I've done quite a few projects with Colloidal silver (CS) in the past and this is my first time with STS.
My initial thoughts when comparing DIY STS kit to CS is the STS process has more setup and prep. I would say the CS wins out slightly in this category. However, the STS instructions were clear and not difficult to follow. I would like to see a complete 1 time set up kit available. Sourcing the bottles and sprayer online seemed to be kind of pricy and difficult to find. I ended up just using mason jars wrapped in tinfoil as suggested by others here on afn.
The next issue I found is it just makes to much for a home grower to use up within a year. It's not the end of the world but I'm just not that keen on keeping around mason jars of solution. Their ready to use spray seems far more practical for non commercial use. I will have to give CS the win again in this category as it's simple to make just what you need per plant.
So that brings us to price. The cost of making Colloidal silver is 2 silver rods about $30 and 3 9v batteries about $6 Canadian. I've been using this same silver rods for over 2 years now and they show little signs of wear. So the STS is going to cost you slightly more @ $46 and not last as long.
So with that said and out of the way here is what I'm looking forward to. I only need to spray STS a few times a week. I was doing CS up to 3 times a day for 4 weeks. A major pain in the ass, giving STS a big win here over CS.
I'm excited too see how well STS fairs with pollen production and strength over the next few weeks. I find CS to be a bit on the weaker side and low producing. As a matter of fact, I find it rare when I'm doing a CS run in my tent to find stray seeds that I did not pollinate directly myself.
