Indoor Variac help needed

Try looking in your computers case. The cooling fans inside them usually have a curved baffle directing the air onto the cpu. When you remove this baffle the noise increases substantially. Would it be feasible for you to recreate this effect? Hope this helps or gives you some other idea, best wishes.

Yes it sounds like it would be feasible, thanks for the idea

Cheers pal, have you a link to whatever variac it is you're talking about?
Thanks is quite strange, I suppose you aren't seeing the link for some reason? It shows up perfectly fine in my browser. How about I paste a modified link in this post and you copy the text and add another w at the beginning. See how that works.

Hi

You suppose right lol using firefox anyway, but the link shows up using edge ( internet explorer ) which is even stranger i guess. Ive looked at these before but have been put off by what ive read online about dimmer type controllers causing more hum or reducing fan life as they don't step up/down voltage like what a variac does. But for £14 i'm willing to give it a go so i'll let you know how i get on with using one

Many thanks again

You are correct, this is a chopper as opposed to a true variable variable voltage. It cuts the voltage out and back on. Yes, it can reduce the life of the unit and will make some noise. It also doesn't work well if you try to setting very low, you will hear the fan bump on and off as the current cuts out. All of that being said, they do work well for what it is and all of the variacs I looked at in the UK, which I assume is where you are because of the voltage, was outside the price range you wanted to stay in. If you run across something you would like to use just drop a link in here, there are several electricians on the forum that can make sure the specs will work for you.

Thank you for taking the time to explain things to me and yes i live in the UK
