Ok thought I would knock this up as a few of us newbies have had our fingers recently burnt using these systems.

DO NOT COVER THE WHOLE DOME!

When using air domes it is recommended to add the likes of hydro pebbles / corn partly covering the dome this will help prevent the growing media for instance soil or coco causing problems by clogging the system up especially when running in conjunction with the autopot systems.

An example method

In this case I have decided to use Clay pebbles the first thing you do with the pebbles is wash / rinse them as they tend to come covered in dust etc. Being new and a small grower you could use a colander and a shower head over a bucket to keep the mess to a minimum making it easier to discard of the waste rather than just washing it down the sink-basin hole

Once you are satisfied you have rinsed and removed most of the loose debris it is now time to adjust the PH of the pebbles if need be as some can come with quite a high PH level (depending on brand)

Now add the pebbles to a bucket and let them soak for 24 - 48 hours or so in reduced PH water the pebbles will also adjust the waters PH after time so do not forget to check the PH level again before adding them in to the pot

Once you have stabilized the pebbles to your required PH level it is now time to move on to preparing your pots and media. Place the black marix disc into the bottom of the pot and sit the air dome on top of the fabric and now part cover the dome with the pre prepared pebbles around 1 to 2 inch should do it leaving the dome visible

TIP :hand place the pebbles around the edges of the Marix disc to stop it folding and to hold it in place making sure none of the pot holes get blocked .

After this finally add the rest of your growing media whether it be soil or coco with perlite mixed etc for me I will be personally adding a soil and perlite mixed at a ratio of 50/50 as this is more suited towards a autopot system when running soil .

I also found video's on youtube telling people to put the copper coated fabric in the autopot. I put mine underneath my pots with the copper side facing the pot. Am I correct in this @Hansbricks & @A-Train?

Yes that is the right way ;)

I am almost ready to start my 3rd pot this being the only one setup with the air dome correctly

The first time I used the autopots I got a nice smelly root rot. There was no airdome of course. Now I have the airdome, completely covered with perlite...so I guess next time I'll try your advice and only cover partially. Good info.

Thanks! :slap:

Hey bro, did your kit come with both the marix disc and root control disc? The UK versions have both, in which case the marix disc goes in the pot and the root control disc goes underneath (gold side up). For the North American versions there is only a root control disc, which goes in the pot gold side down. (Refer to their guide, here).

I got both in my UK version and put the marix disc in the bottom of the pot, and the root control disc copper-side-up underneath the pot. Good to know I did it right  Thanks mate!

It seems to me we shouldn't use any kind of pebbles, etc in the bottom. there has been discussion on AFN recently about exactly this. So I have decided to question Auto Pots about their reasoning. Maybe they have a better answer, maybe they are just plain wrong and are assuming its a good practice!

Here is the email I just sent:
"I'm trying to fathom your reasoning for putting clay pebbles, etc in the bottom of the pot. doing so is contrary to the hydraulic movement of water.Water movement stops at the interface between differing mediums and resists further movement until overcome by gravity. It would seem to be even more of an issue when moving water against gravity.

I've used Modular Hydro's A.I.T ( Air Injection Technology ) unit in a 20 gallon pot or organic soil, with great results. Why not run straight medium ( soil, coco, etc ) in auto pots?"
