Maybe get better reception with the antenna up higher, such as on top of the tree next to your house?
Maybe. I wall mounted because winds can be fierce, I knew it would blow off the roof. If it was tree mounted every time tree starts to sway reception will be lost. It has to be pointed precisely, any movement away from the sweet spot and no reception. I can live with the outages. Up here we call it the inconvenient lifestyle, and just seems 'normal'. Or is it the 'new cruelty". lol.

If needed, do you have, can you use CB, ham or other radio, distress beacon, etc.; or are you sometimes simply totally cut off from reaching anyone?
Village is 20 raven miles down valley, VHF loud and clear.....
We've been at this camp on the river going on 15 yrs. When we first moved up here it was up in the Brooks Range. 40 miles from village. Was usually 7 months from when trail crapped out in spring till doable snow in early winter, no contact. No way to 'phone home'. 12 yrs up there. Lived on our wits and physical prowess, wild things. Our new camp on the river, and much easier access to village, is way better for old folks.

Regarding: "Was usually 7 months from when trail crapped out in spring till doable snow in early winter..."

So in the arctic, you can leave/travel locally in winter when ground (tundra?) and river are frozen, not in spring and summer (due to mud and perhaps simply no roads)?

simply no roads)
and incredibly rough terrain! From the air the tundra looks like a putting green. Reality?, the worst walking terrain, ever! Climbing the mountains up here provides the best footing. Boat and snogo, in season, is how people and stuff gets moved around. Nearest road that goes anywhere is over 200 miles away.

window grow up-date
April Fool start can be glitchy. Night temps a little too cool in window enclosure. Slowing things. And cool spring soils teeming in their rush to life. In the cool soils damping off type organisms find a niche for a short time. They will consume any seeds or sprouts that aren't vig enough.

On the right, Stone99v4, cruising along, she's fem, so 1 pot up to speed.
Center, #6 Stone Dragon, 4 of 4 germed, 2 fell by the wayside. I replanted, need fems.
Dark Sirius went 1 for 4. A good plant, so I put more seeds in.

Man, @MediScrogs Goldstone x Lost Angel 0 for 4 ??? I soaked more seeds 24 hrs, then paper towel 24 hrs. Nothing yet. I have a new pot ready to go it they show.
I replanted the 'failed' pot with Mediscrogs Carmelita F4. No matter how this pans out, I'll be getting more gold. Now I'll have 5 plants in the window, plenty of room for 1 more.

.those cones
Few years back we had a mast year. The spruce where covered, and when the seed let lose the air was filled with rotating, flying seeds. Now there is a thick carpet of baby spruce any place the soil has been stirred. Like in camp, around cabin.
