TLO: For dummies, from a dummy.

Any good top dollar Organic soil will do ..personally I like the Espomas brand better .You want a clear base and add stuff so you know whats in it.I think he washes the soil beforehand if im not mistaken..or only ones that had nutes cant remember lol I dont like the OF I like the happy frog better..but i have bin hearing concerns over fox farms current soils ..I had big stix in mine .and i dont like the way it doesn't hold water for me.:karma Cloud:

Yea sure just make sure to add ya goodies and cook it and you are good to go..some mix the HF and OF then add stuff to it after its recycled form use.Just needs to be organic and have no time release nutes.I think more coco based soils are on the move though.

Unless there are problems you're trying to fix you shouldn't need to "clean" an organic soil.

Hey Bad, I made up my first batch of TLO last spring using L's recipe, including all the ingredients that he listed as being optional in his recipie.
What I ended up using for my 'base' was ProMix Bx with micos, for the peat moss, and then I just purchased some inexpensive bagged organic compost at one of the big box stores for the ‘compost’.

Here are some pics of HR gear, using this recipe. You will notice in the first set of pics are Photo plants, and if you scroll down to the second set, you will see one of my Autos that I am growing indoors with this mix.

I am a brand new grower, and for me, I know I made the right decision growing with TLO, and couldn't be happier with the results for my first grow, despite all the newbie mistakes that I made/make.

Hey X if I want to make L's tlo but I have nothing to start with, should I just buy a few bags of Fox Farm Ocean Forest Mix 50lb for the compost part?

You don't have to be that fancy, but I agree with Piggy, if you're going to start with an product, I'd use the HF... but, to me, fresh Happy Frog is overkill if you're going to use L's recipe. I like the Organic Espoma potting mix for this purpose. You will be adding more than enough amendments with L's recipe to carry you through a couple grows.

I rinsed my original compost (OF) thoroughly, a couple times, because I had used ferts in it. I was simply thoroughly flushing out any possible chems... and all the nutes, which was okay because I only wanted it for a base.

That brand of coco is perfect out of the bag to use with chem nutes, it's my favorite medium right now and I get great results.

HOWEVER

It is literally the kiss of death for anything I've tried to do organically...just flat out doesn't work, in my experience.
