Ok, I'm the fool who does things as cheaply as possible, and sometimes has some rather "strange" ideas about lighting, etc, and like finding cheap as hell solutions for growing a plant that some may find useful.

So the experiments started here but I felt it was just turning into a grow journal so, well here we are, the new "comedy of errors" thread where I find new ways to kill a plant.

At the moment, I'm sticking to what I know is working, and that is a mix of a common or garden "bio" compost over here with perlite. The reason for the compost I use is because it is "soft", have to be careful about K deficiencies, and can be picked up in local DIY stores. The plant below, a Paradise Seeds Auto Maria II (Why Paradise? There was a seed shop across the narrow street from a coffee shop in Amsterdam and there was a multipack at what I thought was a reasonable price to me. No other reason), is now 13 days old, 8" wide and 3.5" tall and is in a 5l pot for now but will be transplanted into a 17l fabric pot in a week when she will go from being under a single 230v 14.5w 6500K deglobed LED replacement bulb to the panel in the DIY LED thread.

So, let the circus begin. There will be smiles, and tears, and fun because this is all about the enjoyment and learning at this time, slowly improving techniques (a 10l plastic pot is NOT enough) and yield, but doing it on a budget that costs less than some BAD "grow lights" and that means string is mandatory.

Enjoy the ride with Maria. I think I best raise the light up a bit.

I’m just back from a week away so I’m playing catch up. Nice to see a Grow journal from you, it’s all about the results at the end of the day isn’t it so it’ll be nice to have more info on how to grow using frankenpanels now we know how to make them.
Also, it’s nice to see the end results!
I’ll pull up a chair on this one......

Also, my fabric pots arrived! Yay!

subbed :d5:

you dropped the 10L for bigger. do think all autos will have the ability to fill more than that, given optimum conditions? could it potentially be a waste of medium if you were to grow a typically smaller auto strain?

I like big pots but I wonder if i’ll end up wasting space and soil at some point and wonder if I’d have gotten the same result from less.

also hi Maria :toke:

Given how the entire 10l was filled, yeah, she'll fill a 17l fabric. The biggest difference, as far as I can see, isn't the size but the shape. As the roots go down they get constricted in the more "tapered" traditional pot and I could see that the Pandora was heading into distress near the end, hence more root space and a different "shape", for the speed I saw water go through told me all I needed to know.

So I have a week to get a bigger saucer or three, for I get the feeling my terrace at the rear of the flat will get assorted things planted next year, and then expensive stands like old BBQ grilles will come into play so the bag is not in contact with standing water.

Oh, it will be fun because I'm talking autos and photos under whatever I have at the time, depends on the mood I'm in.

So, a wee update.

She's cleared a foot wide and barely 5"tall, so the fabric pot has been filled up ready for transplanting. Not going to happen today, the fabric pot has been pre-watered and is sitting "acclimatising" to the environment so the temperature shock is as low as possible, so tomorrow or Sunday. Have to say she is loving that compost, should get a good 3 weeks before I need to feed her after she's transplanted.
