Outdoor The Kaylx Kid's 2011 Fast Bud Windowsill Grow Journal

Some updates. Don't have internet access at home, so I'm posting from an internet cafe...sketchy, but anonymous...I hope.

Two sets of pictures, basically. July 18 (16 days from seed, I mean starting germination) and July 22, which is 20 days. They are little seedlings now. They will probably show sex in a week.

The weather has been grey, cloudy, humid, and generally bad for plants. But the girls are really starting to pick up, probably thanks to having more leaves to catch the sun, which leads to more growth, well, you get the idea.

Day 16, #1-5; Day 22, ##1-5 (couldn't upload #4 for some reason, she is in between 3 and 5 in size and development)

August 1 - 29 days from seed in wet paper towels

The girls have been growing much faster, stretching out quite a bit. A couple are starting to flower, the others seem like they are holding on for something.

I feel like the plants are pretty scrawny. There were many cloudy days and it was just grey and wet. Finally we've had some good sun, but it's very hot and still quite humid. But the plants seem to be surviving, but I wouldn't call it thriving. The stems are still very thin, and if I water them wrong sometimes they fall over and I have to pile up the dirt around their stems. There is just no wind.

There is quite a lot of variation between the plants. Everything from pretty full on indica, like #3, and then you get a tall, thin-leaved girl like #5 who is clearly toward the sativa side.

#3 has been flowering for several days now, and only now is #5 starting to show anything. The rest have absolutely nothing or some undefined extra growths at the internodes.

Plants #1-5, each new set of pictures starts with a profile.

They loom like they are coming along nicely.I kno wat ur saying. They look alittle small 4 their age looking at mine. And I kno mine could've been bigger if I jus put them under lights from the start. We are having another shite summer and my gals missed out on a good few days proper growth due to the weather.Mine have been under a 250w light for 5 days now and are flowering nicely now.Jus keep doing wat ur doing and u will be smoking some cool bud soon.

I really do wish I had a light now. I am going to treat myself to a 240W spectra as a gift for working so hard lately. Might not be for a couple months until I can do it, but now I know that's all I need for personal stash and I can grow some serious dank.

But this one is good because I get to watch autos grow. I can definitely see that they are as small as the limiting factors allow - heat, humidity, not enough light. But they look cool, and I think the final product will be high quality. I started adding nutes and I think they like it. I will get some high quality flowering nutes. I think the heat or something locks out nutrients.

The weird thing is that the two polar opposite plants, the indica looking one and the sativa looking one, started flowering first. Two others are just finally starting to show some indistinct flowers, and one is just a super runt.

I think indoors under LED I can have several strains going at once. Now I totally want to breed an auto strain that does well in this climate. Obviously some genes are for faster growth and quicker flowering.

Bud Porn

Some early bud shots. #3 the indica pheno is the most advanced. It is also the shortest, at about 8". The others are like 12-14", sativa pheno. One is about as advanced in flowering as the indica, the other two are just gaining momentum after stretching a lot very late, overtaking the early flowering sativa.

The two late-bloomer sativas are like over a week slower in flowering, possibly two, but bigger plants overall. The indica is well into forming buds, with branches budding at several internodes. The two late sativas are just showing fully formed calyxes. Such variety within just 5 feminized seeds.

I think due to the hot weather, these plants need more water, more often, and nutes. I mixed a decent soil, but I think the soil dries out and the nutes get locked up. I have no idea what PH is either.

So I added some stinky organic juice, one very mild for Veg, one with a decent amount of P for Bloom. The newer growth on the plants is the healthiest. They were not expressing their genes strongly in the leaves, so they would sometimes only have 4 blades, or malformed blades. It was simply a lack of nutrition and water.

I let them dry out between waterings. I think with the heat over 90 almost every day, they could stand 2-4x a day waterings. For now I'm doing 2, adding nutes each time, and they are really taking off in terms of development and flowering. I am using pretty conservative amounts of the nutes, maybe 1-2ml per liter. They stink to high heaven too.

This weekend I'll pick up the premium organic nutes with fish, humic acid, and something else. I think they will like that along with the Bloom.

My camera died, but I'll get a new, better one. They are looking really nice, some of the crystals are impressive, considering these are stunted plants less than 15" tall, one less than 10", but with massive hashy nugs. Just touching them leaves your finger sticky, with a very sweet smell, like berries. It has little odor otherwise, all the plants. That's good I think for now, since I'm doing the window thing.

It's an indica pheno, and now I remember why indica is such a treat to grow. Such strong, hardy, symetric plants. Really strong genes. My next batch will be Himalyan Blue I think. I wants me some Kush!

But I have one interesting girl, one of the late blooming giant-bonzais, and it has the weirdest calyxes and pistils, no visible crystals. I've never grown something like this, but it is still very short and has strong indica traits as well. But it's buds are the complete opposite of the short indica pheno, which has huge calyxes and sugar is appearing on the surrounding leaves too. I need to get a camera to show you guys.

Well the girls seem to like added ferts. I'm alternating with water as my gut tells me, and my gut is pretty good at this, and I hooked up a basic auto-drip system to make feedings easier. I have a big bucket of water and just dump nutes in there at a pretty low concentration, maybe 1-2ml per liter water. I just fill that bad boy up and turn on the pump, which splits off into 4 nozzles. IT doesn't really move that fast, although the pump is rated like 600l/h, but it works. The plants get a nice dribble to light stream of either nutrient rich water or pure water in the afternoon if it's been hot. I plan to do a light feeding at night.

I added this OM-3 stuff which has fish, humic acid, and kelp. I'm really pleased with it. I think it will activate the soil, if only for flowering. It's black and smells like resin, not as bad as the other stuff I have, which smells like sour shit. Next time they get this stuff from almost day one. The guy said my plants will get huge if I use this stuff. That's all I need to know. I wonder if he has any idea if I grow weed. I wonder if he grows weed.

Since there are no hydro shops here, I'll have to go to Amsterdam before the coffeeshops stop selling to foreigners and pick the brains of the master growers there. I want to see lots and lots of plants, and smoke lots of dutch cannabis. Then I feel I'll be ready for the next grow.

Buds are swelling all around and are looking quite impressive. I should have 2-3 more weeks, but not sure at this point if they will keep growing. Will get a handheld microscope or loupe to check the trichomes. What's funny is that they sell those everywhere on the street. I should have at least watered them more often when they were veging, but at the same time I like their compact size. Small enough to hide on my windowsill and not really look like much from the ground level. I still keep the white screen about halfway up to obscure vision.

Hey, any updated pics? I'm Having an issue with a plant that needs to be taken out of my grow area because its gotten too big. I was thinking of putting it in a closet with CFL's, or possibly by a large sliding glass door.

I had heard that the glass window/door will greatly reduce the efectivness of the sun light. So seeing how yours are coming along could persuade me to just set it by the glass door.

Even though I'm a licensed MMJ patient where I live, my glass door is viewable from a very busy street. So thats sort of detering me from putting it there. Do you worry about someone seeing them on the windowsill? Did you camouflage it in any way?

The Home Stretch

It's been a while since my last update. Then my camera broke. Then I got super busy.

But here we are with some updates - approx. 59 days from seed.

The girls are all very small. I think this is due to pot size, and the fact that I could've watered more often, and I could have probably added nutes pretty early. Of course this strain seems indica dominant as well. I think the tallest plant is only 12".

So they are easy to keep out of sight, at least from the ground, and I have no neighbors too close. Everyone has stuff growing outside their windows, and I do have some cooking herbs too.

So my total yield from 4 plants (Feminized 5-pack; one was a super genetic runt and never flowered) will be very small, but I'm more than pleased with the genetics.

And I will soon harvest some very high quality buds, and I know what I could do to probably double yield next time. It isn't going to happen outside, that's for sure.

There were just too many cloudy days in a row. Luckily there were also lots of sunny days, and the sun is strong.

I suppose I have another week or two at least before harvest. Two plants started flowering at least a week earlier, but the other two are taller and are putting on some impressive looking buds. I didn't like these plants so much because they seemed to take forever to flower, but now they are exploding.

The ones with more sativa, the taller ones, also have more of the foxtail type bud formation. And they are just glazed in resin already.

Everyone is starting to smell, esp. since I've been using organic nutes these past two weeks. Skunky, hashy, and fruity flavors are not super strong (yet), but definitely there.

I took two pictures of each plant, one of the main bud, one of a bottom bud.

Quality is really nice even down low, and I credit the genetics. Remember the taller ones are about 12", the shortest one is like 8", but should yield some fat nugs.

I originally had plastic screens in front of the plants, see p.1 I realized quickly they were blocking the sun, so I took them down with some trepidation. But I made sure to go outside and see if I could make out anything, and you just can't. I left on the white netting around each plant, so from outside you have to look at an upward angle, so the view is not clear at all. But my plants are really bonsais, dwarves, but amazingly easy to grow and the quality is very high. So I could maybe get away with having some plants outside all the time except winter, but the risk is not worth it. I'd rather go inside with LEDs and see what these genetics can do with ample light and good nutes.

If you're plant is getting big I'm not sure what to do for an auto. You could train them, but what's the point. I definitely would not place a plant in a window easily seen by passers by. So either find a place outside that is hidden but gets some decent sun, or start planning for the next round now knowing some of the challenges you are facing.
