Ahhh.. I read convo in the link. I think we are talking about two different things. I am talking about keeping fresh cuts in a zip lock bag, stored in the fridge (in darkness), the same way the link discusses. The comment you are talking about from that link is talking about storing cuts in water, (in light) and once those cuts start to root, they cut the bottom of the stem to start the process all over again.I didnt try to post a pic as i didnt find it relevant. You can find the discussion here: https://www.thcfarmer.com/threads/how-to-keep-clones-for-over-a-month.29779/
Have you tried cutting the stem more once in a while to keep the woulds fresh to absorb nutrients? How often do you chabge the water and do you give it any nutes? Whats your general methodology for storing them?
The zip lock/fridge method works for about 2 months.. Im sure it's plant dependent, but I wouldn't plan on it rooting after that amount of time.
The 2nd method, if stored in a cup of water, could theoretically last until the cut dies. Putting a fresh cut in a cup of water is one of the oldest and slowest method of rooting a clone. I can see that lasting closer to three months if you cut the stem, but that's still pushing it.
Remember, a fresh cut knows it's been detached from its food source. Under low light and veg cycle, its main focus is to grow roots. It's using its stored energy/food to generate roots. This stored energy/food will eventually run out without roots and and food source. The "suspension" happens in darkness and low temps. That's why the fridge can store an unrooted clone for weeks without it trying to generate roots.
Contrary to what most say, when cloning in a cup of water or using a rooting cube, nutrients and ph when cloning is irrelevant. Ph only matters when npk (nutrient) values are involved, and roots are the only things that will absorb nutrients from the water. Fresh cuts don't have roots, thus can't absorb nutrients (through their stems), thus no ph'ing is needed.. Same with nutes. No real need.
I don't use nutes or ph, or the old school cup/ bottle of water method. I just use small rockwool cubes soaked in two water and rooting hormone. That's it. I don't usually need to store cuts for long periods.
If this concept where possible with autos, I think we'd see the major auto breeders using it. Instead, they do the opposite.. They start with 100's of seeds.. grow out say 100 plants, reverse the one of best growing plants.. Collect its pollen.. Grow another 100, pollinate the best female. It would save them tons of time and money if they could grow an auto, clone it, store it, harvest the mom, smoke it, ect.. One of the major issues with that process and autos is, what if the harvested mom doesn't check all of your boxes after you smoke it? That auto clone that's been stored for three months, won't last until the next set of plants are harvested.
But with all that said, this is what growing your own is all about! Try it!! See what happens.. See how far you get! Maybe there's a loophole someone hasn't found/thought of that's waiting just for you!
