I wanted to get an early start this year on some plants outside so I already planted some seeds, despite the temperatures only being in the 60 - 70's during the day and a cooler low 50's at night. I already germinated my seeds for about 48 hours and they had some nice centimeter long taproots. My question is: Are these temps too cold to expect these seeds to sprout?

It's possibly a bit cold at the moment - they'll probably sprout but not thrive at those temps. In the cold mine usually turn out quite a bit smaller (although still yeild) than they would if the temps were 70s to 80s.

Personally, i think autos do best at aroun 80-84f with a 10f drop in night temps.

Can you start them indoors and move them out when the temps raise a bit?

Yeah I know those aren't ideal temps. It's slowly starting to warm up as the days progress though. It's been 24 hours and nothing yet. I used a leftover seed from last year and a freebie so the loss won't be that bad. Unfortunately outdoors is my only option. I don't have any sufficient source of lighting indoors, or will they sprout without it?

You can sprout your seedling with .... One Cfl bulb lol :D seriously!

Keep it low enough to get some warmth - like 5 inches

Keep it above the pot and on for 24 hours.

I threw a seed in and they did a little plastic container in April and it was about 59 during the day and around 50 at night with rain. I had picked up the container because it had fallen over and low and behold a sprout. I also threw a White Widow BB that sprouted also and it popped although they took a week to sprout. The weather has warmed up and the little girl is growing nicely. I did it for an experiment to see if they would sprout in less than optimal conditions and they did. It is not the best way but it showed me that they will survive unless the conditions become so extreme,I am still surprised it has made it this far.

I very much appreciate everyone's replies and information.

There is life! :)

I planted my 2 germinated beans on Monday morning, and now have 2 sprouts as of yesterday (Thursday). One Trans Siberian (which I've grown before indoors, fantastic plant) and one chemdog auto, which was a freebie. :D

It was a warm day so I assume that helped finish the process of popping out of the dirt. Usually it only takes about 48 hours for me, but given the cooler temperatures I can understand.

This is gonna be my 2nd attempt at growing outdoors this summer. Last year it was pretty disastrous due to an overwhelming amount of rain.

For those interested, here are a few clips of my indoor grow from a couple years ago:

Thanks, guys.
