Looking for my first pH Meter to get started with. I just wanted a good starter kit for my first couple grows and then possibly stepping it up if i feel i need more accuracy etc. I would like to spend less than $50 but i am just looking from some suggestions from the board. I am really having a hard time finding one to purchase.

Get the yellow one on eBay that's like 12-15 bucks. Works like a charm for me, and I keep some calibration solution handy just to make sure every few weeks, but I've only calibrated it once in the last few months.

I have bought 3 of the yellow cheap ones from Ebay so far, everyone of them has worked great and is accurate.
For soil PH I use the following which is also cheap but seems pretty accurate.

Imho, there is no such thing as a "starter" ph meter. Just get a good one, or you will get a bad one, and then get a good one anyway, because a bad ph meter is bad, and it will go fubar very fast, so you end up paying more than just getting a good ph meter to begin with :P So if you spend less than 50 now, you are actually spending 120+ bucks effectively.

That being said, I wouldnt pay less than 70-80 bucks for a ph meter, and at that budget you can get some pretty good ones.

Check Hanna instruments, I am sure they even had a waterproof pen ph meter at that price range.

Thanks for the replies i am going to fork out the extra change and get the hanna

That one you linked is a PH + EC meter combined, and waterproof, really good for just 120-130 bucks, but he needn't pay that much if he doesnt want an EC meter.

check texas instruments; way cheaper but just as good as HANNA. there is a brand called milwalkee too; not sure of the spelling. just google pH pens. just get the pH pen, not the combo's. these are for nutrients and water. for soil and organics; take a handful of your medium and put it in bottled water which has a pH of 7.0 or neutral and then see if it goes down or up and the amount to adjust. dolomite lime is a soil sweetener and too make it more acidic there are countless ways. google for your area.

Sorry bro but thats neither an accurate nor scientific way to accurately measure ur soil ph.
To measure "soil"/medium ph, you need to get a ph meter that is made to be inserted into soil.
If you are growing coco/hydro, get the normal pen ph meters that are made to be inserted into the water you intend to feed/circulate.
I think you need the pen for soil as well, since you probably also want to know the ph of the water you feed as well as the ph of the medium itself. Don't take my word for it tho I'm no soil grower, strictly hydro.

I decided to go with the hannah combo water proof meter and it has served me very well!

If you have the money to invest in a good one, id suggest doing it as it will save you money in the long run replacing or upgrading in the future

hahaha...im still useing freakin drops man w/ no issues...i bought that Milwaukee one and it sux..every time i went to use it it had to be calibrated. i've used the drops from the start and like i said i've never had a problem.[
