I have a 10 plant RDWC set up of my own design hooked up to my diy water chiller, 74* water. System holds about 100 gallons while full. We have been using Heisenberg tea through the entire grow, the first harvest with this set up (10 plants) has yielded about 7 pounds dry bud. I have a little bit of a brown algae problem, not bad but annoying. I have an old spa ozone generator hooked to my air pump that runs about 1/2 hr 2 times a day. No negative effects yet. I have read until my eyes hurt trying to see if anyone else has used something similar.

My thought process on the ozone as a disinfectant run in small quantities through the air stones is as follows. When ozone encounters a unwanted guest it will attach itself to said algae / bacteria and kill it while releasing the extra o2 atom in the root zone. I will run this for 2 days to kill the invaders then shut it down and add my tea. let the tea do its thing for a few days and start the process over until my algae is eradicated. I Would like some input on the idea if you care to chime in

We're running 2 of these systems in a sealed room with co2 controller. The smell from the room is greatly diminished since I have started running this. I do not go in the room while its running just to be safe.

There is an airstone beneath each root ball

Thanks

ozone in a hydroponic solution will destroy the nutrients and chelation necessary for proper plant growth.

heres link to some dude that build something similar

I've had it running for 2 days now with no ill effects, I have read where it will drop some nutrients out (can't find it again) but I will do a res change on each run of the ozone cycle before I add the tea back in. My plants are healthy just trying to rid myself of the brown brown before I cross the finish line, about 30 days left. all autos

I've never tried it so don't know for fact, thought about once because i had dead hot tub but a friend told me it will work to good. the link i gave buddy did a few grows, maybe some info in it.

Looks like Magnesium and zinc are targeted by ozone, as per ozone solution web page. We had it kicked from the last grow or so I thought and it's sneaking in again. I might run it 1/2 hr the day res change to save from starving the Mg during flower.

it has short life span and it should just degrade back to oxygen so on timer maybe the answer , for some reason i believe 3 mins of contact and it kills most organisms. i wonder if it will show up on a ppm meter to help you mess around with how much time to run it.

heres link about drinking water https://water-research.net/index.php/ozonation

Thanks for the links good read. I have it on a timer now so I don't forget. It runs 1/2 hr 1 hour after lights out and another before my morning check. So far the PPM, EC and PH are rock solid after the 1/2 hr runs. The 03 has dissipated within 10 minutes of shutdown. I'll change water tomorrow and add some tea and see what happens.

Ozone is highly reactive, can oxidize most anything. "Oxidative stress" and "free radicals" (which is what ozone is) are best totally avoided. If the ozone reacts with and kill algae, why wouldn't it also do a good job of killing likely more sensitive plant roots?

I presume there are better options for getting rid of brown algae (if it's even a problem in the context of feeding 'tea' which presumably is full of microbes).

Agreed, but i'm not going to run it on a daily basis throughout the grow . If the algae is gone i'll leave it off. This is only an experiment on a very limited basis and strictly monitored. If it shows no disruptive signs on my girls or equipment it may be good for short uses to correct small problems before the become big ones. That is my ultimate goal

Still sounds risky vs. proven methods or doing nothing, more downsides than benefits likely, particularly since no one has cited any reason to presume that the killing action (if this even does anything) will mostly be restricted to the algae. I presume, with ozone generators long available, that using them with hydroponics has been tried and that we'd all know, it'd be common knowledge, if it worked.
