Hey all! Newbie here! Somewhat obsessed with educating myself on just about everything related to my grow. You know how it goes, I’m sure .

I noticed that the photoperiod version on Royal Gorilla is different than its auto flowering version, in that the Royal Gorilla Auto is also mixed with cookies.

Strain Info on RQS’s Website
Royal Gorilla Photoperiod: Chem Sis x Sour Dubb x chocolate diesel

Royal Gorilla Auto: Royal Gorilla x Cookies x Ruderalis

So is the Royal Gorilla Auto actually a Royal Gorilla Girl?

Why would they mix cookies into the Royal gorilla Auto strain without advertising the cookies genetics in the name? Has anyone tried the strain? Can you notice the cookies influence?

No. Once crossed, you now have a mix. It has 33% royal gorilla genetics.

Very common in the auto world. Should be renamed so that it doesn't confuse people.
When 2 strains are crossed it gives you an entirely new strain. Like the RG, made up of Chem Sis x Sour Dubb x chocolate diesel. Would it still be RG if you just added X Rudie?

Adding in the cookies is the topper. If you left it in photo and crossed to cookies would it still be the same?

Am guessing, the cookies came along with the ruderelous in a previous workup. It may be that it is their go to to cross to photo.

They could back cross to get more of the photo mom, but that requires a lot more work. But, they, and most all other breeders should be a little more upfront about the breeding and naming.

Naming autos directly after photo genetics is a fast way to get me moving in the other direction.

There is no GG#4 auto, there is no gelato 33 autos...not only were these individual strains, but they were also individual plants, these are clone only strains, no seeds available, ever.

I need to go smoke... am way too long winded!

Gonna add... I have yet to see an auto strain that I could recognize the photo parent... most of it has been fantastic weed, but nothing I could put on a shelf and sell as the photo parent.

Hey Arthur, thanks for the info. I see it as a fun bonus that they added cookies genetics to the RG Auto. However, it does add to the confusion, as the photoperiod version of RG doesn’t have any cookies genetics. A better name would have been Royal Gorilla Cookies, or something along those lines, imo.

Have you tried the strain?

I haven't, when I first made the switch to autos I got burned with a poor quality plant from a questionable breeder. Was ready to hop back to photos and someone here suggested mephisto.
That was then... haven't looked back. If I'm not running their gear in the tent, then I'm running my crosses of their gear, or working on a couple of my own projects.
Have probably run a couple hundred autos now, love them, I just get a little grumpy around the names. (Old bay area sfo stoner) I feel Meph did it right with things like 4 assed monkey, you get the hint there's gorilla glue in there.

RQS has a good rep, am sure it smokes fine. But I'd be suprised if it looked smelled or smoked like the royal gorilla you get elsewhere.

Oh that’s really cool! I’m growing: Northern Lights by White Label, Royal Jack by RQS and last but not least, Royal Gorilla. I’m also growing Fast Bud 2 by Sweet Seeds, which to my understanding is similar to NYC Diesel. But... the plant is so small and its buds are still raw after 8 weeks of growing. It’s my fault tho... I was penny wise and pound foolish when it came to buying lights. I should have gotten a much better light from the get-go. I have four plants under 1 Viparspectra 300 and 1 Mars Hydro 300. At 8 weeks, the NL is still looking raw. Size is fine, but the buds are raw.
I think if I had had a stronger light, they would finish faster. :( Currently eyeing the TSW2000 by Mars Hydro.
I’ve read a lot of praise for Mephisto. I cannot get their seeds, but I have access to some other cool companies that I’ve been eyeing lately, such as Dutch Passion and Barney’s Farm. Have you got any experience with them, Arthur?

Barney's yes, but not with autos. DP, I haven't. Most of the photos I used to grow were cuts from other local growers, living here I've had some pretty fantastic access to phenominal cuts. Autos, like I said, 95% of my experience has been Meph, have worked my way through about 70% of their catalog. Then went looking for a good male for breeding, now am too busy to try too many other strains or breeders. There's several I'd like to try out, I just need more space, more time or both.

I have never smoked a strain that I knew the name of before! So I’m growing veeery impatient! My first purchase consisted of a whole bunch of classics (Jack Herer, Northern Lights, and WW) alongside some newer strains (GSC photoperiod by White Label and Royal Gorilla Auto). Cheers!
