they have a valve, a valve can stick or get an obstruction, the water pumps i use in camp, water will not go backwards through them but I'm thinking heavier duty type thing
When I did DWC I always left the pump on the floor, and the power went out a few times. No problems. By my guess...the tube comes up out of the water, over the top of the bucket (higher than water level by 6 inches at least) and down into the pump manifold....too much static pressure to bring water in through a stone...all the way up and over the lid. Like I said...never a wet line once.
