I've always wondered how much truth and how much urban legend there is to the "raise your air pumps" bit. But...seems sound enough to me that I've always done it just on the off chance.

they have a valve, a valve can stick or get an obstruction, the water pumps i use in camp, water will not go backwards through them but I'm thinking heavier duty type thing
