Just had a whole house water softener installed and a drinking spout that makes basically alkaline water. Is it ok to use either of these for watering soil plants? I know the alkaline will need to be ph balanced for sure but wasn't sure if I'd have issues with either of these for watering.
Yeah I've been MIA for a bit but hoping to get back here more often in the next few weeks when I start growing again...

I believe you're ok, as long as you are checking and adjusting the PH. But since I'm not 100% sure, I'll reach out for help.

I read somewhere that artificially softened water is a no no, can't remember why. I think they are called ionic exchange softeners, so maybe something to do with the nutes not staying in suspension. I'm just guessing.

:pass: Cheers Witchy luv, good thing you did!

.... :toke: DCAT-- let's make double sure, mate... is this the ion exchange type softener that Itisi mentioned? As in the type you need all that salt for? If so, then that water is not good for any plant... What happens is, the ion exchange beads preferentially bind the CaCO3 to themselves, but in doing so, release an Na+ ion from the bead surface in exchange,... this results in technically softer water (lower mineral content), but adds that damn Na+ into it instead! Too much Na+ is toxic to plants, and will build up and kill them eventually,... The salt is used to make a strong brine solution which is washed over the beads during the recharge process; under those conditions, this reverses the binding preference by brute force of concentration, stripping off the CaCO3 and binding the Na+ again,... then when regular water goes through again, the softening process continues...
I don't know about the drinking spout, I need more info there,.. does it have it;'s own set of independent filters, and what types? I imagine it has the usual particulate and carbon filters, but if there's no RO unit, or another ion grabber type for the Na+ specifically, then the Na+ is still present,...:smoking:

Thanks for all the help everyone!! Yes the main system is the salt ion exchange type so I won't use that.
The drinking water is a reverse osmosis plus adds an additional coral type filter that boosts the alkaline levels - better for body but pretty high for plants I know.
Sounds like I'll either stick to my outdoor hose bib or try the drinking water unit...at least for soil grows. My DWC will stay with the outdoor water as the drinking only has a 1-2 gallon reserve tank said be refilling quite often.

Boy...glad I asked! [emoji121] [emoji13] [emoji16] [emoji28] [emoji23]

Also glad I don't mind being wrong. LOL
