I have my meter set to use the Hanna scale for PPM also, but I use EC as my primary measurement. I think EC is better for two reasons, even the best home meters are not really measuring PPM, they are measuring EC and then using that data to approximate a PPM value. The only way to get a real PPM value is with laboratory grade equipment. Second reason is just for simplicity, all three PPM scale convert to the same corresponding EC value, so it takes the guess work out of which PPM scale to use.
good luck!
edit: Hanna is also nice because it makes quick PPM head math easy, 0.1 EC = 50 PPM on the Hanna scale.
