Poppies are on the opposite of photosensitive marijuana, they veg at 12/12 and flower at a long day period like 18/6 or 20/4. You will need much more light if you want any results, lots of CFL or a MH/HPS setup, at least 300-400 actual watts or there will not be much growth and small or non-existent pods. Look at how they grow in their natural environment, full sun all day (drought conditions) if possible with slightly acidic soil, OF soil should be great, it is what I used this year outside...

Just consider this: If you are growing poppies inside there is hard to say you weren't intentionally growing a known narcotic, outside with a patch of flowers is much easier to get away with if anyone asks... Most people cannot identify different types of poppies and will not think twice. I live in a res. neighborhood and had no issues with mine outside, everyone has poppies of some sort around colorado...

For sure I just don't have the option to grow outside. I would be afraid pickers coming along and snatching up my stash and or have my garden watched by the cops and waiting for me to come when it is harvest time. So I think for now indoors is all I have but I will keep an eye out for a good opportunity to come along. Here is a good seed company that offers P. Somniferum at a good price. The only problem is that they only have two kinds But they are local right in Broomfield. Botanical Interests

Hey, So i'm new to this and I have 1000+ Persian white poppy seeds. I'm thinking about tossing some out side because it does make sense that they're just wild plants and unless people pay close attention they could be anybodies. I live in Tx and it's desert dry here. Most is just sand and doesn't seem to be the kind of soil they would need. What could I expect and how should I maintain them?

Just throw them out there and let them grow. if you bury them deep and by deep I mean 1'' at the most they will grow with no problem this forum is the right place to start and get some info

Just an update. I got the seeds to pop up just 2 days after planting them here on the 4th day this is what they look like. I think keeping the air nice and cool really helped out a lot

Wow that's truly exceptional growth. Two days after popping and four days from seed.. however you want to look at it, that's very exceptional growth.

Like whatsgoodie says that is quick but it could be the strain too or just some eager seeds. There is huge variation even within the same seed batch. It could also be that since they are local they were cold stored (stratified) which would make them pop very quick because they would already be active in the pack... Either way nice job and keep at it!:buds:

well, the thing is that the place i'm going to plant them is a very dry area. I'm talking about gravel and sand and patches of grass here and there. Would you recommend i add some fertilizer or some treatment?
