Welcome to AFN. Sorry to hear of your loss. Fallen heros, and those close to them, are treated with the utmost respect here. As already mentioned, start a grow journal in the New Growers forum and I'll help you along.

Couple of quick questions. What is the size of your grow area and what kind of lights will you be using?

Big Bud sounds like Fox Farms nutrients and the orchid nutes could have been Better Gro. Fox Farms are pretty good, I've used them before, but I prefer the Advanced Nutrients pH Perfect line. A little more expensive but they last a long time and do out produce anything else I've used. But in order to use them your base water must have low ppm, below about 120. Are either of your testers capable to checking the ppm of the water?

3gal pot will just allow your plants to grow a little bigger. This would only be an issue if your light can not support bigger plants. As for smell you'll need something eventually, even a couple of a stinky strain can fill a house with the smell. You might have enough nutes to go can you list off the names of what you have and we can help identify. The grow method I linked to earlier is fairly cheap as far as nutes go.
