Hey there! Been a patient for aprox 3 years now. Long story short...upon seeing me struggle financially and having to choose between paying for school or paying for med's, my best friend/soulmate took it upon himself to grow for me. When he was deployed, he left me with enough to last me until his expected return. Little did we know, he wouldn't be coming home. So, here I am, finding myself in that very same position, only this time...I'm on my own. May his Love, his Journal, and his Spirit guide me.

Welcome Ezyahs, I'm sure you will find growing autos quite simplistic with all the help offered on the AFN. I'm sorry to hear of your bestfriend, a buddy of mine from high school also didn't return home from deployment. You have my deepest condolences.

:smokebuds::peace:Sorry about your loss.If you are planning to learn about growing autos you are in the right place.May be you could post some of his journal so we can see what he was growing.Feel free to ask any questions you may have regarding growing.Along with his journal, his spirit and our help we will get you on your way in growing this magical plant.

Thanks guys! Its nice knowing that you're so ready to help! Also, sorry to those of you who have lost someone too. Honestly, Im starting from scratch here. His Journal is pretty much illegible but from what Ive gathered...Pro Mix was his medium, he had an 18/6 light schedule but he neglected to list what kind of light aside from CFL. Also, I can see a nutrient schedule, but cant read the types of nutrients he used. The only one I can make out is "Big Bud" and "Orchid nutes work just as well". I dont know what to make of all thins, maybe ya'll can help? My seeds are expected to be here in a couple of days so...any tips offered are useful.

When your seeds come in start a journal in the new growers section. Muddy is the sites new growers helper and is very knowledgeable. Are the seeds you ordered automatic?

Greetings Ezyahs,
I am sorry for the loss of someone so irreplaceable in your life.
I find growing to be very cathartic in it's own right, so hopefully you will find some healing and peace in the process of producing your own meds as well as using them.
Let me suggest you start a grow journal in the New Growers Forum. Muddy is the primary moderator there and I am not sure you will find a better handholder thru your first couple of grows.
In starting the thread, let him know what things you do have. Every detail you can provide will help.
I realize you are on a tight budget, but there are a few things you will need to have a sucessful grow.
1. 2gal containers. You can get by with a little smaller, but doing so will probably reduce your yield.
2. Soil/Soil-less medium. Pro-Mix is a very good mix and Muddy often recommends it.
3 Nutrients- Since you are on a budget, I will leave it to Muddy to suggest a simple economical choice for you to use.
4 Lights- Do you have the CFL's your friend used? If so, post that info in the journal, if not you will have to decide what you can afford.
5 ph pen- Many beginners try to get by without this and when they run into problems, have to scramble to get one. The thing is many problems might have been avoided in the first place if they had the device and used it.
6 Fans & Filters- You will need a circulating fan blowing on the plants at the very least and depending on where you live you may need a carbon filter with an exhaust fan to deal with the smell.(Growing cannabis can be quite stinky)
Not to try and discourage you in anyway but I have found for most people (not those that are very creative in repurposing things) the startup cost for a closet room grow is around $350 at least. That amount covers the minimum costs I have found for the items on my list. Now most of that is for things that will last you for many grows, but it is something to consider for a successful grow. You can get by for substantially less but you will have to keep it very simple and probably just one plant at a time.
Good Luck!

Welcome to AFN Ezyahs. I'm so sorry for your loss - he sounds like an amazing guy. All of the above advice is great. We're all here to help however we can.

Here's to you and your soulmate. :smokebuds:

Hello ezyahs, you have came to the place. Friendly and very knowledgeable and experienced growers here. No question is a dumb question here. Sorry for your loss. My thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family. One love and may peace be with you.

Once again, thank you for all the kind words and well wishes. Had I known this was such a friendly community I wouldnt have lurked so long and would have registered/posted sooner, I'll admit, I was very intimidated at first glance.

Yes they are automatic, well except for some freebies [although I did put a bug in their ear ]

gtron, not discouraging at all! My budget is not as tight as you think, thankfully I have a great support system backing me and will be able to keep costs low through donations and trades.
1. I've been offered 12 3gal containers. Not that I ever plan to grow 12 plants at a time, but it was offered so I thought it might be good to have extras as backup. You however recommend 2gal...is there a big difference?
2. ProMix, no trades or donations here but a deep discount through a friend.
3. On my own with the nutrients, so I guess, not minimal cost, but midrange?
4. Lighting and fixtures will come as a trade from a close friend, that being said...I'd like to keep this cost as low as possible as I would not have charged this person regardless but they insisted.
5. I have 2 testers, this is one thing I've understood the importance of from the beginning.
6. "Stealth" isn't really an issue, but one of the parentals HATES the smell [just my luck right?] but as a family we assume that the location of the grow will be far enough away from common areas for it not to be an issue, however...I have budgeted for this if it becomes a problem.

I will start a Journal as soon as I receive my seeds. Anyone have any advice/tips/things I should read until then?

Sincerely,
The girl who just found she's been watering a dead cactus.
