Hello everyone :jump:

I'm now going to a new start after a couple of germination failures.
I guess I don't have green thumbs :p

This time a seed of Sweet Dwarf Feminised from Advanced Seeds.

Started it in a cup of bottled water (pH: 6,27) that I keep in a plastic bag in the dark, room temp: 22° C.

Any feedback is welcome.

Welcome to AFN and the New Growers forum. Did you place some moist paper towels in the bag to keep the seed moist? You might also want to put it somewhere a bit warmer, like on top of a hot water heater or a piece of electronic gear.

Tell us more about your setup. Lights, soil, nutrients, etc. so we can see if you've got everything you need for a successful grow.

thx for the welcome,

Muddy: for now the seed is yet in the cup of water, no aditional warming. I will wait up to 24h to see if the seed sink and then transfer it to a plate with towels.

For my setup I basicly don't have one, I've got the seed of known genetic, a 10L bag of planting soil and a bottle of organic fertilizer, the rest will be pretty much a "guerrila grow".

My intent with this plant is to learn and I hope to try some experiments with colloidal silver. My main target would be to get a lot of feminised seeds for the spring.

If it fails (due to low temps for example), I stilll have a seed of Biodiesel Mass Fem in reserve.

So you're planning on growing it outdoors? Don't know where you are but here in the US it's well past outdoor season unless you live in Florida. Good soil is important, even outdoors. I hope what you have doesn't contain any slow release nutrients as they are problematic.

Update Day 1 (transfered to plate):

OK I've now passed the seed to a plate with damp paper towels.

I live at a latitute 41º North so I'm clearly out of season, but my intent is not to grow bud,
but to get seeds for the next spring.

I'm not really sure yet how I will manage it, as long as the plant stay under 30 cm I should be
able to keep it stealthy in my room using a couple of CFL's.

If I cannot manage to keep it's size small I may have to put it somewhere outside in guerrilla grow,
but even so, I will need to protect it from rain and cold with some kind of greenhouse/coldframe.

Has for the earth I'm not really sure if it's slow release since the bag doesn't state it.
the info I have is:

Humidity: 48%
Organic Matter: 46%

NPK: 1,1-0,8-0,9
pH: 5,8

Calcium: 0,7%
Magnesium: 0,3%

My guess would be that since it is 46% organic matter it as not been amended with chemical nutrients
and so shouldn't be slow release.

Is this normal?

ok, it's now 48h since I put the seed to germinate,

The first 24h the seed stayed in a cup of water; at the end of that time, the seed was very dark and had doubled in size when I transfered it to a plate with paper towels. At that time the seed wasn't cracked yet.

It's now been another 24h with the seed in the plate with paper towels, I keep the plate in a plastic to conserve humidity, in a dark place on top of a electronic device to get a little warm. I keeped the towels lightly (very lightly) wet, defenitivly not soaking.

Now my question:
the seed is now small again (original size), and is color isn't so dark, clearly the seed is dryer that when soaking in a cup of plain water.

Is this normal and Ok since the seed is not soaking in water anymore?
Is the seed getting to dry? should I soak the paper towels a bit more (been adding a drops of water now and then). Maybee it get too hot from the device, should I place it somewhere else, the towels don't burn, but a clearly warm to the touch (so I guess more than 37° C)?

No, doesn't sound like your soil has an slow release nutrients, just some starter nutes. The pH on it is a bit low. Consider adding some dolomite lime to raise and buffer it. It should also contain a good bit of perlite to provide good drainage and oxygen to the roots.

As long as you keep the paper towels moist you're fine. That is a bit too warm though. Between 75 - 80 is usually best.

You biggest issue outdoors at this time of year will be keeping the roots warm. Once the root temperature starts getting down into the 50s growth slows and finally stops.

Ok, I'll wait a couple of days more to see if germination succed.

If I get it to germinate, I'm comsidering a PC grow to get me through the winter.
No perlite for this time.

what pot size do you suggest for pc grow, remember that I'm not growing for bud, but to get seeds for the spring (seed-run), so the smaller the plant the better.

anyway...not to much planning, for now I just want a successful germination with which I have a 100% failure rate at the moment. :p
