With all the hot weather we've been having, it's water melon time again but in taiwan they have come up with a twist on the theme.

Taiwan has gone crazy for watermelon toast

Hundreds of people in Taiwan are queuing up to get their hands on a loaf of 'watermelon bread'

With this stifling heatwave upon us, it certainly seems to be the time to be tucking in to huge slices of juicy watermelon. However, across the globe in Taiwan, they are doing it slightly differently by gorging on watermelon bread.

Lee Wen-fa, the head baker at Jimmy's bakery in Yilan County, northern Taiwan, came up with the creative invention to encourage children to eat in the hot summer months, when they sometimes lose their appetites.

The bread is coloured using charcoal, green tea and strawberries (surely that makes it a superfood...right?) and is sold by the loaf or sliced and toasted. Despite baking around 2,000 loaves a day, Jimmy's is struggling to keep up with the high demand of avid customers who are having to wait in line for their loaves.

There are two loaf options, some with yellow flesh and some with pink flesh. Despite their bright colours, neither actually tastes of watermelon. However, this hasn't stopped excited customers travelling for hours to get a piece of the action.

The loaves bear a striking resemblence to the infamous square watermelons of Japan that sell for around $100. The fruit is so popular in the country that people often given them as gifts to one another.
