What worked on the ants was not orange essential oil.
This is much easier to make...
Soak orange peels in vegetable oil in a warm dark place for a month or so. It will smell like oranges...strain it and you are done.

How to Extract Oil from Orange Peels
Here's an easy way of extracting oil from oranges or any peel for that matter, to use as an extract, body lotion or even shampoo.

Peel 6-8 oranges and put the peelings (cut into 2.5 cm or 1 in squares) in the top of a double boiler. Cover with pure vegetable-based oil such as sunflower, olive or almond oil.

Using the flesh, squeeze out the juice and place in the bottom of the double boiler. Then put on the top part of the double boiler that has the peel oil concoction. Make sure the juice doesn't touch the bottom of the top boiler, before putting on the lid.

With your stove on a light heat place the double boiler on top. Keeping it at a low simmer for about 1-2 hours. Make sure the boiler lid is on tight, you don't want to lose all your precious work.

When it is done, the oil in the top of the boiler will have the same color as the rind.

Stir the mixture up, then turn off your stove and let it sit there for about an hour to cool down. While waiting, you can prepare your sieve/cheesecloth and your container.

After about an hour later, pour the cooled oil into the sieve/cheesecloth/strainer a sieve. With a cheesecloth you can squeeze out extra extract using a compression twist to the peel mixture.

You're done! You can use the oil to rub on your body while showering, to add flavor to dishes or tea or even as a body lotion because it smells lovely.
It's ok to use Orange Extract oil on your skin.
Never ingest or use Orange Essential oil on your skin.
