And yet, I don't think 72 now is the same as 72 then. I really feel like the "old guys" I knew were much worse off for their age. They looked 60 when they were 40 and by 70 they could have been 95.
Of course I'm not exactly preserved, I'm pickled!
Those old farts from your youth were probably worked to death!
In my young engineering days, I spent many hours sweating my ass off in a steam powered engine room and one was a combined engine room and boiler room.....the latter is much hotter. There was quite the A/C in those spaces, yet the usual temps were 120*F and up. It was nice in there when playing around the Arctic circle, though!
You think about the heat constantly, mainly in the beginning and then just before getting off. That's with modern air conditioning. Steam powered ships haven't always had ac and combat ships especially. Since early steam powered ships were coal powered, you had men stoking the boilers with a shovel..................with no ac. Early ship had a draft type ventilation and the later forced or induced draft came along. That must have been brutally hard!
Most people just don't have an idea. Most physical work has got easier in some form or fashion. The guys that came before us, just got wore out quicker.
My self, I've always looked older than my age. I was buying beer at 15. The very first time I was carded,, was when I was home on leave, after being in a few years. I went prematurely gray with Mom plucking them when I was a Jr in high school. I always had a beard until we buried them in the mid 80s. Baby boy didn't recognize me! The look on his face was priceless!
He heard me coming to get him from the babysitter next door. Our little routine:I would say "Where's my Stevie?", before going "Dada!!" I would hear him say and she'd open the door. He went from happy face to an instant frown. And when I spoke again, he did the RCA Victor Dog head cock and then started crying his ass off. He wasn't quite 2 yet and would have been normally telling me about his day with his half ass English jibber-jabber by now. His bigger brother couldn't convince him I was Daddy!
The sitter just let him stay until his Mom got home!
I imagine I'd look a HELL of a younger if I'd shave this mountain man beard, but I'm good with me.
