@Weed Warrior @Jraven @trailanimal I noticed that back a ways you guys were talking about fishing for rockfish. As I'm sure you guys know, rockfish were and still are a salt water species. Here in Va, They have always been one of the great sport fish in the Chesapeake Bay until over fishing just about wiped them out......after 10-15 years of strictly enforced weight and slot limits, they are coming back strong.
Another thing they did was find out that rockfish could thrive in fresh water for their whole lives. After quite a bit of study, VA Fish and Wildlife stocked several of our large lake impoundments with them and within 10 years we had another great freshwater sport fish! It worked out well because they use a completely different part of the lakes than does the largemouth bass which is the other apex predator fish......Rockfish love the deep water and hunt shad the same way they do in the ocean.......they chase them into a compact ball and then blast through them, knocking out as many fish as they can. If you see water "boiling" out in the middle of the lake, get over there and cast a big minnow or shad plug right in the middle of the boil. If you are lucky you can tie into a rockfish weighing between 20-30lbs! Most rockfish are caught this way or by accident while fishing for another species. You haven't lived until you tie into a big rockfish with ultra light tackle that you were using to fish for crappie or bass!
